BMW are cheapskates as far as equipment levels go.

My wife drives a Seat Ibiza FR which costs about £18,000 and has Adaptive Headlights as standard yet we have to pay an additional £900 for them
Maybe 16000 for the car and 2000 for the headlights ;) I think the quality of how they work is also worth something. :)

The hoops are easy to remove yourself, I think you can do it yourself in half an hour and order the parts online, that should save you at least 2-3hours in BMW billed workhours at the dealership. :)

Wind deflector

I ordered parts yesterday, they will be ready for collection tomorrow. Have to check if I have screwdriver Torx T15.

Initially wanted to get glass wind deflector, but after reading a bit about it, went for OEM one.

You think the options list is bad on bmw? You should see the Porsche one. Packs don’t exist and the car comes bare bones!

Wind deflector

I collected three parts mentioned earlier:

51 46 7459683 Trim rollover protection bar front left - £26.25 + VAT
51 46 7459684 Trim rollover protection bar front right - £26.25 + VAT
54 34 9481141 Wind Deflector - £193.34 + VAT

Total cost with VAT £295.01, £125 more than ordering Wind deflector from factory. It was stock car, so had no chance to spec this option. I hope it makes a difference, but I won't know until next week or later. I may come up with some replacement parts to cover the wholes in the hoops, if necessary. OEM parts £110 each.

Swapping headrests took 5 minutes each, so total work 10-12 minutes. If you can use screw driver, it's not worth paying BMW to do it.

Parts.

On the left, front part of headrest, on the right rear part of the headrest. They clip together.

The deflector does make a difference for me. Especially as there is a gap between deflector and the end of the door window. I like the look of it being part of the car, and not a hideous bolt on.

Joe Achilles compared the Z4 and TTRS roadster and found the Z4 to be more cosseted. Shame there isn’t the neck scarf like on the 4 series. Had this on an A3 Cabriolet and used it whenever there was a chill in the air, roof either up or down.

I went on a short drive topless with 60mph max speed and can feel difference with wind deflector. Weather is good, so will test it again today or tomorrow.

Yes the difference is notable.

For other people possibly doing this are the original hoop covers drillable to house the deflector brackets like the E89 or do you need to purchase new ones?

The E89 ones are marked on the inside where the drill holes need to go.

G29 M40i Thundernight with Ivory interior, all option packs (here for a while, hopefully )
G29 M40i Misano Blue all option packs (Gone 26k of fun)
E89 35iS, Valencia Orange, Design Pure Traction pack (Gone)
    E89 23i sDrive, Silver (Gone)

I don't think drilling will help with anything and hoop covers are cheap. Deflector itself is expensive.

This might sound daft, but even with the windows down, and the deflector in place, its more comfortable than I expected. At least driving around town.
