So tomorrow marks the end of our Germany 2020 road trip.
We’ve had to cancel the ferry for our return and switch to Eurotunnel. Thankfully DFDS have given us a credit note for the return for up to 12 months time, which is good.

It also meant changing our itinerary and when we should be in Breda in the Netherlands tonight, we are in Straelen, just a few miles from the Dutch border. It’s a small town with a pleasant square with some bars and restaurants, so, not exactly a hardship.

Tomorrow we drive from here to Calais (non stop) so we don't have to self isolate when we get back as we have only holidayed in Germany and not got out in The Netherlands, Belgium or France.

We drove from Dunkerque to our friends in Frankfurt on the 7th of August. From there we went to Berlin to visit friends at their gorgeous townhouse in the city. From Berlin to Prerow on the Baltic coast. We did make a stop at Classic Remise in Berlin, which is a great car restoration, storage and sales place. Well worth a visit if you’re passing. Then a few days relaxing on the coast. Bike rides, swimming, beach and smoked fish.

From there to Hamburg for an overnight stay and to get a taster of the city. Neither of us had been before and it’s a great place. We will definitely be back to see more. We left there this morning and used more Autobahn to bring us here to Straelen.

The Z4. The car has not only performed faultlessly but it’s taken four bags and our cooler bag with ease. We also picked up new cushions and table cloths for our German beer bench and it’s found room for those as well. The storage net behind the seats has been great for drinks and snacks and that’s also kept the foot wells free. Ive put masks and gloves and wipes and bottles of hand gel around the cabin and that’s all worked well too. The Nav has worked brilliantly and the HK surround sound has definitely improved with use (and the software update).

We’ve done a mixture of town driving, standard motorways and the autobahn and the car is currently averaging 35mpg. That includes long stretches at sitting at 160/170kmh as well as our max speed of 215kmh on one run.

We did get stopped by German customs yesterday but they were more keen to stop and talk to us about the car. They were very nice and were really interested in the car and said they had never seen one before.

Since leaving home 11 days ago we’ve seen 3 other G29’s. Two outside Frankfurt (one red 20i and one frozen grey M40i).
The third one was at The Grand Hotel in Ahrenshoop. Not sure what this was as only saw it side on. Not seen any others, anywhere.

The car has had a few admiring glances. A couple of nods from the boy racers and an old boy in his AMG Merc at the petrol station outside Berlin commented that it was a nice car.

It’s been a great trip but I’m looking forward to getting back home tomorrow. Car will be deep cleaned and then put away for it’s next outing. We’ve both enjoyed the driving and the car more than we ever would have done in the S5. Couple of pics below.
