Would you be able to design the front duct so the air points more into the centre / bell of the disk rather than on the disc itself or is this not possible with the space? I'm guessing would be a bit tight!

Also I don't know whether you've looked into replacing the printed duct that goes on to the heatshield. I ended up replacing mine with a metal version because as you know I'm a ham fisted idiot and broke your original printed ones multiple times! Maybe an option to consider to save costs?
duct.jpg Basically like this
Hey! I'm not a girl! :x  The first version is based on the backing plates I made for my Z3 track car that runs 345 mm CSL discs. The middle of the outlet is placed right where were the vains/cooling inlet of the discs are, and 1,5 cm to each side. So yes, a part of the airflow hits the disc but most hit the vains or inside the bell. The position/duct on the new racing backing plates use the same outer diameter but is 10 mm bigger/closer to the centre of the wheel hub, the outlet is also a lot wider.

Haha I'm aware! You would be best using zip ties instead of hose clamps. :P I've looked into options but the manufacturing costs won't justify the added strength. To be frank it's only you and one other guys in sweden that have broken the ducts on the backing plates and I've sold a lot of them.

My unique selling point with the 3D-printing is that I can offer kits to rare models (I make for common models as well) other companies don't have any economical interest in, but I also try to do it at a reasonable price. I've looked into sleeving the ducts as well but that means the walls have to be made thinner which means they will be more fragile to bending forces rather than clamping forces, no bueno. If I would consider using a dimension of sleeve that means stepping away from standard pipe dimensions I have to have the sleeves machined and that will become too expensive as I don't have a lathe myself. But I do try to evolve and always look for new solutions but I have to consider if it's worth the extra cost and most importantly will the customer want to pay for that extra cost?
 Apologies mate, had auto correct on! Adjusted it now :D

All fair mate, I had a feeling that the duct pointed more on the disc but maybe I'm wrong then, not investigated that closely.

Yeah I won't mention the ducts again, zip ties probably would have been a better idea! Well I may be interested in the new race back plate, presume you will sell those separately for the like of me to upgrade if we wanted? Will it use the same 76mm (?) hose that the original version did?

Haha no worries! :D

You're partly right, the backing plates are developed around the CSL discs since I feel they are the most common size (stock/upgrade/race) and if someone runs smaller discs it works as well and bigger it works even better. Would be hard to have a unique backing plate for all different sizes of discs, but if someone really wants a one off (run smaller discs on another model) I can make it happen. However if you stick to the OEM size or bigger it works perfectly well.

Ofcourse I will sell them separately! I sell every part individually if someone wants (as you're aware ;)). The new and bigger ducts will, just as the old, be able to get in 2"/2,5"/3" or even a custom size for that matter. So yes, you can use the same hose and just swap out the backing plates/ducts. Price for the race version incl. ducts will however be a little higher due to several reasons (cost for more laser cutting, dimple die, larger ducts...). Will let you know once I've made the first kit.

So here's the new race version of the front backing plates, I'll be doing the rear cooling kit next.

A bit of inspiration of how it looks like painted (Although these backing plates are for E46/E46 M3/Z4 and F8X M2/M3/M4):

Looks great. I’m looking forward to seeing what you can engineer for the rear brakes.

Just to keep you updated on the whole rear brake cooling thing, here's the prototype that is adjustable and is mounted in the RTAB holder. (Going to bed now but I'll update more detailed tomorrow)

So I ordered 1x of each piece to test fit them. The RTAB holder is shared among all E36/E46/Z4 platforms and is mounted to the car with 3 bolts. My bracket uses 2 of them and, due to the design being adjustable to accomodate the different bodies it's a split design, you only have to remove 1 bolt from the RTAB holder at a time so no new wheel alignment is needed.

Totally forgot, here's the "backing plate" with funnel. Just to illustrate how the design is the parts are inverted in the picture but they will ofcourse be mirrored and on the other side of the OE backing plate. I realised that cutting away a piece of the OE backing plate is the best option due to the complexity and cost of developing a new one from scratch. Also if it's being installed on a street car and you want to keep most of the OE backing plate due to brake dust/dirt etc you can do that, but if it's a pure race car you can cut away everything around it as well.

The original Z4 M bumper ducts were the second kit I designed and a guy in Sweden asked if I could smooth out the transition and he would buy a kit, gave it a try since I've learned some things along the way. Here's the outcome and the new front bumper ducts.

Picture of the new ducts with the mouting bracket, the supporting bottom "brace" to sandwich the duct is no longer needed.

A full kit with the new ducts and the race version of the backing plates. I have excluded the block off plates for the wheel wells since it's cheap to buy the ones from the regular Z4.

Thank you! :D

I have ordered metal parts for the rear brake cooling so it's close to completion. I've testfitted it on my E46 M3 and I had to re-design 1 of the parts for clearance (the support brace). I'm almost sure it will fit the Z4 M as well since they share rear end design, it comes down to the bodywork. Since my Z4 M is all the way back in the garage and up on a 4 post lift and cars all around it I can't really testfit until the season starts. If you're willing to be the first one to try it out I'll give you a discount and re-design any metal parts if they need modification, and send new ones to you free of charge of course.

It's been a while, but now the rear brake cooling is done! Had to switch supplier for the metal parts and that took a while. Rear brake cooling installed on my E46 M3 race car, should fit nicely on the E8X Z4 M platform as well as E36 M3.

Cut away as much as possible from the OE backing plates but kept a small part for structural rigidity.

Image

Painted the backing plates in place as good as possible to avoid the edges from rusting.

Image

My backing plates (adapters/heat shielding in reality) with the 3D-printed funnel. Don't mind the rough surface on the inside of the funnel, it's due to no supporting material and the shallow angle of the surface (will never be perfect with 3D-printing). All funnels will be printed with support but it won't be perfect on the inside anyway, but a lot better.

Parts for the rear intakes (forgot the support brace though). Painted all the metal parts to protect from rusting.

Fitment and don't forget to use loctite on all bolts/nuts!

Designed the kit in such a way you only have to remove 1 bolt at a time so you won't risk missaligning the toe angle.

Here you can see the support brace installed.

Finished result! Very pleased with it and I'm anxious to see how well it will perform on track. Rear brakes aren't as impactfull as the fronts when it comes to braking performance (at least with stock-ish brake setup/balance), but at least it will help a lot with pad and disc wear. On my race car it will help more because I've moved the brake balance more towards the rear.

Individually they're 3300 SEK for the Race front bumper kit and the rear kit will be 2500 SEK, but if you order both or have bought a front bumper kit earlier I'll can give you a 500 SEK discount. So that's a total of 5300 SEK, shipping is 216-351 SEK depending if I can squeeze it under 2 kg (Expect 351 SEK).

And as always... No hose or hardware is included in the kits. Don't have the time to sort that out unfortunately. :|
