For those like me who have a heated steering wheel, the part you buy must have the blue connector as in the photo.

This is the one I bought
Sorry I never saw this when it was posted...…. :headbang:

Just to correct this information, you DO NOT need to buy the full unit with the extra blue connector if you have heated steering wheel, you simply buy a standard one and swap over the clock spring from the old unit. In fact I'd always recommend swapping over the clock spring that you already have, that way you know it works properly (unless it is actually faulty!)

I obtain all of mine through Ebay.
Don't buy them as a set as sellers always sell them for more money that way, buy them individually.
The average price for the trim is around £20 and the stalk sets are from £40 upwards.

Hi,

I'm going to give this ago, so thanks for your great instructions.

I have auto-wipers so want the same again, but when I look on Ebay I see some with this symbol on the left-hand stalk, which I don't have at present, so I don't know what it does. Would buying one with this symbol cause any issues? I don't want to buy the wrong thing, obviously. Nervous enough about doing this!

Cheers,
Ian

Honestly I have no idea why it is on some and not on others. I've fitted both types and it's made no difference as far as I can tell.
I beleive it may be a later thing added for some reason

Hi AnubisZed,

Thanks for submitting very good and clear instructions. :)

I think the symbol you are discussing in the post here above is for the instrument cluster light dimming function, which you can access via the stalk. Not all E89, E90 etc. have the CIC panel for accessing this.

Questions:
On E89 (mine is the 35iS (with steering wheel heating), can I use whichever of the stalk assemblies you propose and I will "automatically" have the Cruise Control With Brake Function S544A? (I don't mean the Dynamic.)
For the steering wheel heating i just swap/use the old clock wiring cassette and heating switch cable as you suggest.

Do you know a good source where I can buy an USB - OBDII cable? Which configuration, USB K+DCAN?

Robert

That is indeed the symbol, and you can alter the light dimming function either on the stalk or via the iDrive, if you have it, on all models.

Yes any of the stalk assemblies will do the Cruise with Brake function (making sure the difference between Auto and Manual wipers!!), but I recommend the one with the part number 9121901. This one gives you the +-1mph as well as +-5mph incriments.

As for the cable, this one comes highly recommended...

First of all, Dave, thanks for all that you do. This thread is amazing and your video is fantastic - a benchmark for what instructional videos should be.

My new stalks arrived in the post this morning and I'm getting ready to do the job. I just wanted to ask whether the laptop needs to be running a 32-bit OS? Can the software run on 64-bit Windows 7?

Hi Tony,

Firstly, thank you

Yes the software in my link will work on a 64 bit laptop, as that is what I'm running it on  :driving:

Fantastic - thanks so much. Just gotta wait for my USB/OBD2 cable to arrive at the end of the week and I'll be digging in. Thanks for the speedy response!

Well, tomorrow's the day - time to get cracking. Just downloading all the files and this Mega.nz website almost immediately stopped me downloading the e89 SPDaten file because I ran out of bandwidth. Does anybody have an alternative link, or is able to send it to me? Thanks!
