If you want a softer ride you can always size up the profile and size down on the width to help try and prevent rubbing.

The harsh ride on the m sport suspension can be an issue with potholes and rough roads.

Yes good point, I found it interesting that I can put 215’s on the front instead of 225’s! Same for rears too of course. I’d like to see a set of wheels the same as mine with narrower tyres

225/40/18 on a 8J rim is streched so watch out for 215.
As a reference - 255 on a 8,5J is a 100% perfect match with tyre being nearly rectangular from behind. Perfect rim protection also, but more importantly - the looks!
Leave streched tyres to Civic owners.
More examples:
245 ona a 8J
275 on a 9J

I'll need to save this list somewhere for the next time I have to get new rubber.

Apart from the obvious, fuel consumption, chance of rubbing, etc I take it there are no real negatives to the widest tyre possible?

It's why when I went up a profile I went down a bit on width to prevent rubbing or to make it less of an issue as it would have been with a slightly wider tyre.

The only regret is I may lose some rim protection.

All great ideas for utilising different tyres sizes. I’m shocked by the price difference of these tyres, for example, I went on to a tyre site, picked a standard tyre and then looked at all 3 sizes that I’d be interested in.

Michelin Pilot sport 4 - 225/40/18 = £107 each
Michelin pilot sport 4 - 215/40/18 = £161 each
Michelin pilot sport 4 - 215/45/18 = £174 each

The cheapest tyre above is the existing tyre size I already have on the car, so I may opt for that one. Why would that size be so cheaper?

You can laugh all you want, but 225 on 8J is little stretched and you can see that. Nothing wrong with a little strech, but it is a fact that they are.
255 on 8,5 are not.
BMW also puts 245 on 8J (f10 for example and their styling 613) and what that proves? They know their job, but fact is a fact.
235 - 245 on 8J looks much better.

That's why I'm such a commoner then, I prefer the cheaper tyres! :D Thanks for your feedback!

Car manufacturers strike deals with tyre companies so they keep making tyres for their cars for the normal life of the car.

So for instance bmw will approach
one of Goodyear, continental, Dunlop and Michelin and say we need this size of tyre for the next 10 years for the new 3 series.

After that they have no obligation and therefore less supply means that in demand tyres in those sizes become very expensive. Unless of course for instance another company like Mercedes decides to use that size of tyre in their new c class.

Also the obvious the more rubber, technology and r&d that goes into a tyre the more expensive they are also.

It's good to compare sizes across different manufacturers for that reason. Compare those sizes in Goodyear eagle F1 for instance and see what the difference is

Fellow Z4 fans, I just mounted Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres 225/45/17 94Y in extra load (XL) type. In one word: fantastic! Direct steering, sticky to the road, acceptable noise, very good feedback. No tramlining or whatsoever.

The stiffer side walls because of the XL, make the car very good to handle in corners. A very nice tyre to see (!), but that is off course a matter of ‘personal taste’.

These tyres can absorbate and transform the 265 horse powers to the road at ease.
At last they are comfortable as well despite the XL.

Hello Wouter,

Would you be so kind and take maybe 2 pics of tyre profile? I would like to compare them to PS4.
I was wondering if they are closer to PS4s and maybe PSS rather than PS4 in the terms of aesthetics :P
Thank you. Dont ask why I have this kind of question haha.

Cheers
Phil
