Where are you based?

I'm sure forum members would be happy to meet up a take you for a spin in either version.

For me it had to be a roadster and with the heaters turned to 11 and heated seats on its an all year round drop top. The hard top provides extra weather proofing and security but on a crisp winters morning you have to remove and store it to drop the roof - I was all for getting a hard top until I realised that it would reduce the top down time so as my parking is secure enough I didn't bother.

But I understand why members have a coupe; secure; suit friendly; no wind buffeting (my other car has no doors so never worried me!) and I agree the lines are good.

BUT ..... you have to make up your own mind!

It really is down to personal taste and what you want to get out of it.

As a lover of BMWs and convertibles, the roadster caught my attention from the off... but never peaked it enough to make it an ambition to own one some day. Then I saw a coupe in the flesh for the first time and I fell in love there and then. To me it was sexiest BMW I'd ever seen and still is. I had to wait 11 years to own one. But I did it, I made it happen and I'm delighted I did.

For me, the essence of owning any car like a Z4 is because it tugs on your heart strings. It should put a smile on your face every time you drive it. Every time you park it up and walk away you should find the urge to look back and admire it completely irresistible.

Have a look at both. Take both for a drive and decide which one you WANT. Then buy it. You'll be so glad you did

Yes, that is probably the best solution - now if only I had somewhere other than the living room to store a hardtop during the summer!
So true. Mine is currently pride of place in the bedroom while I figure out how to reconfigure my shed and buy a stand or hook.......

Being a newbie I am barely qualified to comment of course but here is my take......its my impression that most drivers in general gravitate towards one genre or the other....personally I have never owned a soft top or wanted one but have driven and been driven in many....ok , you are in the open air etc but being a long time motorcyclist of some 48 years my open air kicks have always come from 2 wheels and remain so...for me, fast car road work requires protection, stiffness and subdued external noise. When I have an open air 4 wheel experience its with my sister in her Porsche Boxster or Morgan Plus 8 but am happy to return to the cosy, protective confines of a hardtop....especially on track days!

Addition....

Two icons.....the two wheeler my October 1980 BMW R80G/S ...my third BMW motorcycle and second BMW car ....my first was a nice full specced metallic black 123d MSport ....I return to the fold knowing I have made the right decision again!

Coupe. Drop dead gorgeous and very exclusive. And will hold their value better.
I'm lucky though, I can do the topless thing in my E30 Cabbie.
