Finally bought the 'ball and chain' a new motor.
2017 Mazda3 2.0l petrol Nav Sport. All the toys including HUD. Not the most exciting car in the world but should be good for everyday.

Was reading through the thread and was going to suggest a Mazda 3 Sport Nav, I really like them, control well, nice tech and look good. They're sensible too which will make you appreciate sportier cars more when you get to drive them.
A good choice imo, what colour? Soul Red I hope.

No, actually, it is Machine Grey.

I had a Mazda6 sport nav in the same colour few years ago. Great cars.
Now just got to get me a new one; can't decide between M4 vert or a 440i vert.

No, no, no. It's only my cars I keep changing. She gets to keep hers for a while. Needs new front discs and pads, it's staying until they're worn out!
