It's Time
Ok so I went and drove a different car today, a 3 litre auto. Loved the power and the sound! I looked down where the roof mechanism was and it had standing water both sides. Bearing in mind it was the first one I had driven I found the ride very firm so not sure if I'm just not used to sports cars or whether tyres and suspension were the issue. Will the mpg on the auto 3.0 ever get in to the 30's, I only ask as it will be a daily driver. It will be next week until I can drive the original car I looked at and I'll definitely take the advice on Mot and low offer. Thanks for all your help.

34 on motorway no issues that's what I get from mine. The 2.2i will prob be slightly less tbh.Nick2449 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 15, 2018 4:38 pm Ok so I went and drove a different car today, a 3 litre auto. Nick, I'm not totally sure, but IIRC all 3 litre pre-facelift models had Sport suspension so that may have been why the ride seemed so firm.
And it may have been on run-flat tyres which don't seem to do the ride any favours!
When you look at the 2.2i check whether it has run-flats on it, and get the last 7 characters of the VIN - then you can go to a site like "bmwvin" to get the original spec. That will tell you whether it had the Sport suspension. You might find the standard suspension better for daily use - it's not like it will be in any way barge-like!
I've not had a Z4 with the M54 engine that pre-facelifts used but I had an E46 325ti Compact (manual) for just over 3 years with the same engine in 2.5 litre form, albeit carrying a bit more weight. I did 23K miles and over my ownership the OBC was showing an average of 34.9 mpg! But while it was a daily, for most of that time I wasn't commuting. At least 95% of my use was trips of 30+ miles on dual-carriageways/Motorways outside of rush hours.
What you will get probably depends a lot on your commute, but 30+ mpg from a 6 cylinder Z4 is definitely achievable!

Hi, I e spotted this 3 litre auto with hardtop near me. Initial enquiry garnered response "
It has a part service history
There is very minor damage to the edge of hardtop that meets the windscreen but is unnoticeable when on. "
Reg is GF53MXA
dvertised on E. Bay item number 153192064058.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Hi Nick,
I just had a look on ebay and it looks OK in the photos. The seller has mentioned heated seats (very popular on a Roadster) and cruise control, but it also seems to have the optional rear parking sensors and Multi Function Steering Wheel.
That seat bolster doesn't look too bad - treatment with a kit from someone like Scuffmaster at liquidleather.com ought to sort it.
The wheels look pretty poor, and that style (108) is expensive to refurbish because they are split-rims and need to be dismantled for a proper job. You can try to split them yourself but I've read of a few issues with bolts shearing and threads stripping! Probably easier to just find another set of wheels on here.
It's a shame there isn't a photo of the hard-top. But in good condition and with a stand they can be worth the best part of £1,000 so are well worth having. Even if you never use it you shouldn't have much trouble selling it.
I'd check the MOT history on the gov.uk website to see how it matches up to what service details there are and to the mileage.
If that's all OK, the car looks good in the flesh and you can have a bit of a haggle why not?

So went and looked at it last night. Its up for £4,500. All good except:
Yellow Oil Lamp came on a couple of times when driving(Oil level fine) - Oil Sensor?
Hardtop had a couple of nasty scratches 1-2 inches long, comes with stand.
Alloy wheels as said above need a recondition.
MOT history and service history tally.
Very slight whistling sound when first touching acceleration pedal - split pipe somewhere?
Brake Pedal when pushed reasonably hard causes low deep sound, not squeal. Disks look ok and he said that two of the pads had been replaced recently - need bedding in ?
Transmission and engine all feel good. Brake fluid and coolant replaced recently.
Comes with Sat Nav, folding mirrors, wiring for dash cam, audio cable, parrot bluetooth etc. With the bits doen above it would be good so I was thinking of making a low offer, say £3,750, any thoughts?
Cheers as always

Like Marlon said if you don't want the extra bhp, its worth bargaining for, it does need a good buff up, but that's by the by, the thing it doesn't have is heated seats, bit of a must for me, if you are going to do top down winter days, you will regret not having that, and if you do go for it, insist on a fresh years MOT
