Just looking into this and it seems there is duplicate functionality. The old icon was just the same as the bigger icon on the left when there are unread posts. Clicking on the red icon on the left goes to :

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=104132&view=unread#unread

This is the same location the old smaller icon went to.

I know it is but I just liked the little red box

Hi, having confirmed it is duplicate functionality I won't be bring it back.
