My first choice for winter tyres would be the Vredesteins - I put a set on my Disco3 and use them all year round. Ive now done 15k and would say the are 1/3 worn - Compare that to the total 20k life of the old Pirellis then its a no brainer.
I dont think I would leave winters on my zed all year tho!

They wouldn't last - they scrub away over the 'summer' and you'd have thrown good money away. Mine are still hibernating in the garage, temps still to high down here.

Remember that they are designed to function better at 7 degrees and under - That also means shorter stopping distances in the wet autum days.
I fully appreciate that my D3 and my Z4 are poles apart - but the Vreds I fitted still look very good and have been used all year round. At the same stage the Pirellis were looking a wee bit sadto say the least !
It certainly wouldnt bother me if I had to put winter rubber on the zed to put them on early.
Again I am not suggesting them as an all year tyre!

Can't recall the source (possibly a tyre manufacturer) stating that a winter tyre is a better all-round option in the UK than a summer tyre, i.e. a winter tyre is less-compromised during the warmer months than a summer tyre is compromised during the winter months. Of course I gather that'd be different where outright performance is desired, e.g. those who enjoy a spirited hoon...

Agree with the above really. At the end of the day if you are really hardcore you'd go semi-slick, the winter tyres most definitely aren't as bad in summer as the summer ones are in winter! This is only speaking from the experience of two vehicles though.

I'm just about to stump up for 4 Nokian WR winter tyres. Anyone have/had them ? Owner ratings seem high on Oponeo. 225/45-17

Had Goodyear ultra grip 7+ winter tyres fitted on my old BMW 320 ES wheels (156 wheels) tyre size 205 55 16 H & they are now on my Z4 2.0i M - ready for the winter, drives well & feels like it should, looking forward to trying them out in the snow

Fantastic info. I don't collect the car until tomorrow but feel I should order winter wheels/tyres now. I'm afraid I have been spoilt for the last 12 years owning a Landcruiser.
