Please consider upgrading to a more modern forum

I'm not sure who the admin is but have you considered upgrading to a more modern platform like Discourse(.org)? It has lots of nice features like post edit history, a mobile view, being able to mark threads as solved, etc.

But in the main we're not modern people.
I'm probably a dinosaur but understood and used correctly this format serves all my needs.

Always an update is a tricky thing to do. The migration never goes as planned and some information is lost, new functionalities do not bring in new users and in many cases new interface annoys people that ha e been here for ages.
Unfortunately have seen the downfall of couple of places during and after an upgrade, do not want to happen to this place (even if I’m a rather new user).

Well put, and probably the main point here is that you may find established users don't get on with it and you lose an awful lot of experience.
Whilst I can understand that a more modern format would look much better if you were starting a forum today I am very much of the school of thought that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Also, post edit history can be a double-edged sword. If in an alcoholic haze I write that Pondy is a pillock, but then realise and quickly correct it, I don't want him to be able to see I wrote that in the first place.

This forum (the software) is one of the best I'm currently inhabiting.

One of my other favourites (Singletrack) is unusable to me since its had various upgrades. Just as an idle tab it uses over 800mb of system resources, it kills YouTube unless you close the window.

I'd think most people on this forum would be tech savvy enough to adapt :)

If you do that you can get a mod to hide the edit history, or delete your own post :D (they also don't send an email notification until after 10 minutes, whereas older forums send the email straight away (so no grace period))

Please don’t.

If people want to use a forum that is difficult to navigate, impossible to search old/interesting discussions, post pics to or just simply browse then they can bugger off to one the many Z4 Facebook groups or Reddit.

All of those are easier/better on Discourse. Search is excellent, you can drag photos into the post and they automatically upload/get resized etc. You can browse via sections or latest or top lists, etc. And you can do lots more, like @mention people, have cross-link references (when you post a link to a thread in another thread) etc etc etc

Can't do the drag photo thing, but it's simple to refer to someone in the text, and also to cross ref to other threads.
If you use the drop down list at the top right corner you can look for posts by several different filters.

Could always start your own forum with all the features you want.

Pretty sure some bloke called Kevin said in a film about rounders, "If you build it, they will come."

Yup the features here are pretty poor compared to many others..I think most internet based forums are declining pretty rapidly fwiw

Me too.

This forum works just fine for me and does all that I want.

Any transition to an "upgrade" would probably requires many hours work by the Mods and such things seldom run smoothly.

If people want something newer then why don't they just create a new forum?

I’m quite happy with the ‘simplicity’ of it.

After all, it could be the complete mess that is Pistonheads forum :P

It's not broke and it's a bl##dy good forum.

I developed software for most of my working life. Now I am retired and naturally I hate all this modern cr#p. Not on FB not on Twatter. Not on any of them. This place is just great as it is and will hopefully remain so for many years to come.

Totally agree. The forum is simple and easy to use, letting the content be ”the thing”.

Yep, same here, works fine for me. Been looking at other forums and never stay as they are bloody awful to find things. This one is just perfect, please don’t change it. The Met office keeps updating it’s site and it just gets worse every time.

Just noticed a couple other things about this forum:

- Does not automatically embed a link to an image (on Discourse just paste a link to an image and it will show in the post)
- Does not embed basic data from a page when posting a link

While each thing might seem small, they all add up, and you really do miss a modern platform like Discourse. I'm pretty sure most of you would feel the same if it was installed here and you got used to it...

Where as this forum works (in an early 2010's kinda way) it's not as modern as other forums I use and could do with an update.
