Engine oil

Post by theLOLkid » Wed Dec 05, 2012 2:01 pm

The 'engine oil at minimum' light has come on in my E89 23i. It says that I should add 1 litre of oil.

I entered my registration on www.castrol.com and it recommends:
* EDGE 0W-30
* Magnatec 5W-40 C3

A couple of questions:
* Are there any differences between the two options?
* I don't know what type is oil is currently in the car. Does it matter which one I put in? i.e. I could potentially be mixing Magnatec 5W-40 C3 and EDGE 0W-30 for all I know. Is this safe?
* The car has done about 15k miles and had its first oil change at 7k miles. Is it worth doing a full oil change rather than just a top-up? If so, can I do this myself without affecting Full Service History? Are there any tutorials on changing oil on an E89?

Cheers.

I use 0W 30, but have used 5W once, when nothing else was available and the car was fine, as long as its synthetic oil, that's the main point, I think....but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks,

I've gone ahead and ordered 4L of EDGE 0W-30.

I'm just gonna top the car up with 1L for now and then I can consider a full oil change later.

Every time I've taken my car in to my local BMW garage, the job sheet has been annotated with "Check oil level & top up if necessary" - never been charged for the oil, levels always maintained.
