Spirit Ford - Dundee, MI two thumbs up
HeHe! I know what your thinking... "What are you advertising a FORD dealership on a BMW website for?" Well, in a nutshell cause they provided better service and treated me better than my BMW dealership back in NJ... AND the story that accompanies the Kudos is hilarious (mods, feel free to move to Lounge after a few days if deemed appropriate).
So there I was..... After having just winterized the Zed, I decided to take my first cross country trip in my new winter-beater F150. So last friday, after putting 5000 miles on her since I picked her up this summer, I changed the oil & filter, changed the wiper blades, topped off all the fluids, and took out and took apart the air filter and cleaned it and put it back together. He's all ready for his first trip cross country with me.
I went out to dinner last night with an old friend (never had Crabs before - they're awesome!!!!). Got home around 9pm, packed up and decided I wasn't tired and it was time to hit the road for an "all nighter". It was a bear of a drive across the hills of PA thru a pretty constant downpour of rain and gusty winds. At the last service staion on the PA turnpike I stopped to fill up. It felt like the engine had been running rough ever since the tank got below 1/4. Got back on the road and I thought I felt it running rough still but wasn't sure, so pressing on... Crossed in to Ohio and the rain stopped. Forgot about the motor feelin' rough. Just before sunrise I decided to pull over and take a nap. Crossed the border into MI. The speed limit is 70mph now - woohoo - speeding up - truck in the way - wanting to move to the left lane - mercedes in the way - slam on breaks - put left blinker on - slowing thru 55 - whip wheel left - slam on gas so as not to piss off the mercedes - slam on gas - ummmm, am I sure that's the gas pedal? - the one on the right AJ - OK, slam on the gas - WTF? Slowing thru 50 now - put right blinker on - pull onto shoulder of highway - come to a complete stop - engine stalls. WTF?
I'll stop there and let y'all guess what might have happened based on the info presented.
(FNI - you don't get a guess!)

Is a second guess allowed?
I'm also biased to think you somehow got humidity or water into the engine. Perhaps forgot to tighten up everything after your 'overhaul' before the trip and the downpour and gusty winds made water enter the system. ??

Re: Spirit Ford - Dundee, MI two thumbs up
pvr, That's a close enough guess to win the prize
So I start the engine back up. It sputters but is running. Put her in drive and she idles @ 1200rmps and 25mph for about 1.25miles to the nearest exit. I get to the end of the ramp and she dies again. So I call the insurance company and ask 'em to send out a tow truck. 20 min later a flatbed pulls up and takes me 7 miles down the road to the nearest Ford Dealer. Just as I hopped into the tow truck, my phone rings and guess who it is? Yea, FNI calling to see if I've hit the road yet - Great timing sweetheart!!!
Anywho, no check engine light, diagnostics shows nothing, only that the engine was running lean. The tech comes to the waiting room and asks me what happened, he goes back and a few minutes later comes back with my air filter in his hands. It's a cone type filter and the plastic spinner on the intake end is supposed to be glued to the filter to hold it's shape. Well, when I took it out to knock it against the side of the house to clean it out the plastic spinner thingey came unglued. I jammed it back in to the casing on the car and forgot about it. So the plastic spinner had somehow bounced itself 180 degrees and then got sucked into the intake blocking all air into the engine.
Yea, I'm a dumbass!
So 2 hours and $100 later I was back on the road.
