Frozen Grey - Solid Black or Diamond Cut / Black alloys

Post by alski19 » Sun Jun 22, 2025 9:42 pm

Just got an M40i in Frozen Grey. It has the full gloss black shadow line pack and came with 799 M style alloys in gloss black.. I’m not sure about the alloys and am thinking about getting them changed to diamond cut / gloss black. Any thoughts?

Iirc they are already diamond cut under the paint. Personally out of the two pictures I prefer the black but I'm biased, your car, your choice

Problem with the diamond cut alloys is if they get curbed, the channel that runs along the spoke gets cut into during the refurb process and can dissappear towards the edge of the rim, wheel then looks odd. I didn't like the look of them and had the wheels done in shadow chrome

I would change the colour to satin black. I am afraid I don't like gloss black wheels. As said diamond cut can lead to problems if you curb them.

Do you mean you prefer the gloss black ones that are currently on the car. I really didn’t like them to begin with but they are growing on me slowly. So I’ve decided to stick with them for time being before spending £400 or thereabouts to have them diamond cut. I actually prefer the 800 M style so may just bide my time and pounce if a set ever turn up on eBay.

I had the car fully ppf’d last week and got the badges switched from silver to genuine BMW gloss black at the same time. They are solid black without any chrome edging.

Diamond cut every time for me, the black wheels don't stand out enough. But hey, totally subjective 😁

Your choice, personally I think black gloss goes well with SF red, plus they are cheaper to refinish than diamond cut when they get kerbed.

I like the black of the shadowline pack personally.

Always going to get both options supported when asking an opinion. Sometimes you need to go with your heart… if it helps, I’m in the ‘polished’ camp, but only because I don’t like black alloys (and having owned white on a Mini, which cost a fortune, I don’t like them either mainly because of the CONSTANT cleaning).

Enjoy your car. And share the images of your final decision and of you enjoying your great car.

All black alloys IMO are now a dated look, getting them laser cut will not be as good as original as they have to paint in detail, this was my solution
