Got stuck on getting the blue connector out from the back of the satnav computer.

Will proceed once I know the trick to get it out without removing the centre console plastic

Fitting of Apple CarPlay to oem system

Post by Z4Mariner » Sat Aug 31, 2024 12:24 am

I managed to release the blue connector with a right angle pick through the pass-through opening in the hard pannel separating passenger compartment from the boot in my E86. I was just barely able to pull the black bail (lever) from upper left to lower right in your photo, which ejected the connector. If I need to reinstall it, I may have to take the console apart :(

I don't know the difference in access between coupe and roadster - was your picture taken with a phone camera, or did you have to sneak a borescope in to take your photo? Your photo makes access look better than what I experienced.

I have ordered a 90 degree pick, the access is minimal through the hole. That was a still from holding a phone in the hole and videoing it. I could even film a screwdriver pushing with all force against the black clip but would not budge.

As Stuart said, I guess I pressed on the wrong bit and have to push the blue bit down. How did you get to move the black bracket without using a second tool?

As far as I could, I only applied force to the black clip to rotate it clockwise. My pick was was a sturdy one, and it took me four or five goes. I had to rest my weight on towels in the boot to get the right angle so I could use both hands to push on the pick.

I sympathize ! There were moments when I wondered if I should have removed the console, even if it would have taken way more time.

All done now. Plug finally released with the pick.

Carpet does not fit with the tuner in place so at the moment solved with a hole in it.

Very fast to start up.

Issues found so far:

- 3 second push of controller for audio commands does not work
- screen mirroring does not work

Need to somehow fix those two issues

Very nice system indeed.

Screen quality is good (does not photograph well), navigation is good, using Siri works well.

I would say, 2 hours to install the front bits (mic and aux), 1 hour to do the boot (once you know how to unclip the navigation by touch only).

Fitting of Apple CarPlay to oem system

Post by Z4Mariner » Sat Sep 07, 2024 1:32 pm

Congratulations ! Glad to see that you've persevered to "almost the end" !

Questions - does this install retain the OE display ? If so, it appears to require much less effort than I went through to install a Garmin in place of my Sat Nav display. I like my result, but your install would be in-scope for a far larger portion of E85/E86 owners. Would you say that the so-so screen resolution of the OE Sat Nav was at least in part caused by older Nav software/electronics ? Would you share cost / link to the system that you installed ?

Thanks for sharing this !

It does retain all oem parts. The installation consisted of a new microphone installation in the old location (high up, simple) and an aux cable, both running to the boot.

The resolution is absolutely fine from the screen itself with the new TV module.

Reason I like it is that I want to retain the oem parts and look and feel. Also I can revert it back when selling the car, I would just remove the tuner and buy another microphone / aux cable.

I got it from carphonics.co.uk, you can select the Z4 kit.
