Feb 2010 E89 map updates

Post by Nathanio » Thu Jun 13, 2024 8:03 am

Morning all,

I was looking to see if I could update my maps on my new to me 2010 30i. It's currently got 1.5.20 Road Map Europe Premium 2009-2. There is no i symbol on the map so I don't believe this can be done via USB. If I update via the DVDs will that enable the USB update or do I need to update the CIC another way?

Thanks

You need the i-Level of the headunit updating.
This can be done by your local BMW dealer, but it can also be done by a good independent who knows coding. There are some on ebay who'll do this on a postal service. Alas I can't do this, but may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks Dave, if the dealer is involved then I'm sure it'll be expensive! Might be better to just put the money into a mr12v.

Perhaps I'll see what the newest map dvds are available and just at least get it partially updated

Now there are decent MMI box options like the mr12volt, it kinda kills the standard system & makes updating the maps redundant.

It's not just about more up to date maps, it's about always current maps. And better navigation options (re-routing etc) - it's just a cleverer system full stop.

Andriod auto / apple car play has completed killed the bespoke infotainment systems for all current & future cars IMHO - well worth getting.

I can't agree more. Having Google Maps or Waze at your finger tips is great, but not infallible (as we've recently found out in France). You need either to download the area map or have phone signal for it to work properly though. If you loose phone signal then you'll loose the ability for re-routing (ie; reported accidents and roadworks etc) also if you haven't downloaded the local maps (and most people don't) it'll only work as far as it's last section of the map has loaded. In hot weather a smart phone can overheat, and one of the first things to shutdown will be the mapping, especially vulnerable if you are charging the phone and using wireless connection as this will increase the phone temperature quite considerably.
These are good reasons as to why to have the built-in system up to date, just as a back-up.

Most people don't realise though that the OEM mapping system does have re-routing! here in the UK it works along with systems like Trafficmaster, and this information is transmitted via the RDS radio network signal. It'll re-route for accidents and roadworks, so as long as you have the current mapping update then you'll be good to go. Oh and you don't need the BMW account for this to work  :driving:

The Mr12volt is a great piece of kit and I highly recommend it
Yes, going through a BMW dealer is expensive  I had my headunit reset (as I accidentally Bricked it :headbang: ), and while it was away the guy updated the i-Level to the latest, he also installed all of the available FSC's (Voice, Nav and Connected Drive (as I have a Combox)) and installed the latest Maps, all for £60. Alas I can't find him now on eBay, but there are others that do it. It's always an option.

As Anubiszed says it's still beneficial to have the BMW maps. I once found myself up in the mountains without any signal and no Waze apple maps etc, reverted back to BMW maps and was able to get to my destination. It is well doing the update, I think.

Thanks to the three of you. I did have my phone in my Superb get hot and start acting up when travelling through France and Belgium a couple of weeks ago. I have a mk3 Superb and run an AAWireless adapter and was hotspotting so the kids got use their phones. I swapped to a wired connection and angled the air vent onto it to help cool it down. I don't think I've ever used the nav in my Superb!

I will see if I can get some DVDs to get them the internal maps as late as I can.

I was surprised to not having Bluetooth streaming, my fault for not checking CIC capabilities.

The other benefit of having Google Maps is that it shows you your GPS accurate speed and (usually) the current speed limit.

I ordered a Mr12V unit yesterday morning as they had it on offer for fathers day.

I did get hold of some 2020 DVDs but it doesn't like the FSC code. Tried both VIN and 1b hex file and neither works.

I'll just stick with AA once fitted.
