I’ve had the pleasure of recolouring and revitalising a few sets of seats by now, and what you say is mostly true; it depends on the type of leather though. Aniline leathers are dyed through and through during the processing phase, while the fine-grain nappa leather like we have in most of our Zeds (such as Dakota leather) is actually “painted” after primary processing. This means the factory colour already sits on top of the leather itself and is locked in with a durable top coat.

With that in mind, I set about removing that original top coat today, as well as sanding back the colour layer. Mind, I had two sets of seats to do: for
MaldivesMax and myself. Max’ seats started like this:

Absolutely chuffed with the result, and I really hope Max will be too!
Then, it was time for my seats. While I LOVE Amarone, I decided to give it a twist. A final mix recipe was decided on, comprising of 7 different colours, including a slight dash of deep purple, as a nod to Project PDM. A first look:
