Made a start on the Mrs E89

Post by True-Blue » Sun Mar 24, 2024 4:57 pm

Thought I pop into the garage a do a test spot on the Mrs E89 and, as per usual, did the whole bonnet :D

Lovely car this, one owner from new, 62k miles, original paintwork with just a few touched in paint chips. However, even a car garaged every night from new is going to get swirl marks over nearly 14 years if not molly-coddled when washed.

Here how it was looking;

Martin, you really should change your username to 'Mr Sheen'. Cracking job, as usual.
I wish I had the balls to get a polisher on my cars. I fear I will damage them as I'm a bit ham-fisted (and impatient). :(
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

You’d be surprised how many cars have paintwork like this, this is what happens without the two bucket washing method. The car is actually in tip-top condition, this only took one cutting set and one polishing set to get to this stage.

I’ve finished it with a ‘ceramic light’ spray, but once I’ve corrected the rest of the car to this standard I’ll do a final ‘jewelling’ set to remove that and apply CarPro Uk 3.0 which is a 2 year consumer ceramic coat

Thanks Pondy… if we were nearer I’d happily spend a couple of hours showing you how to get a feel for it and lend you the kit… if you can build a Ferrari from a Z3 you can learn to machine polish no problem

Amazing results and very satisfying to bring the car back to it's original (or better) glory! I bought a polisher and some compound and polish and keep meaning to try my skills on the Mrs Golf. I must stop procrastinating and get to it! :D

I bought a polisher and went mad last summer on my RCZ, spent all day on it and couldn't lift my arms at the end of it.

Looking sharp

I know exactly what you mean, looks easy in videos on YouTube!

I use a Flex 10 8 125 forced rotation, pads do not stall.. but it can ‘walk’ if you get the angle wrong. I use it with a bigger backing plate and Rupes 6” Pads.

It can be super smooth with hardly and vibration and low noise, but when you get an angle wrong you know it :heat:
