Which pilot bearing to install?

Post by Tuna! » Wed Mar 13, 2024 6:32 am

Ordered the exact same kit by LUK Schaeffler LuK RepSet 03-047 Clutch Kit from Amazon and got 2 completely different pilot bearings. 2 Different alignment tools and different notching in each kite pressure plate/clutch disc.

I have seen both styles of pilot bearings listed in parts for my car a 2003 Z4 2.5i with a Getrag 250 5 speed manual.

What is the difference between the 2? Has anyone switched styles? Which style is OEM?

Which pilot bearing to install?

So with a little research I found out that one is a pilot bushing and the other is a bearing.

I like the idea of the bearing having less friction, chatter, vibration and offering smoother shifts. I dont like the idea that a failed pilot bearing can damage the input shaft.

Does anyone know which is OEM?

Does anyone else use a bearing or bushing?

The lack of replies is likely because I’ve never known anyone to change the pilot bearing as part of a routine clutch change!

I guess if you are changing the flywheel as well then? A clutch kit is usually pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing, I've never seen one come with the pilot bearing before :-)
