⌛ Prepare E88 hall sensors for E89 use

Post by RobbiZ4 » Sat Feb 17, 2024 4:08 pm

E89 hall sensors (HS) on the hydraulic rams are very expensive as spare parts. Alternatively, E88 hall sensors can be fitted. These HS use the same housing format, but are supplied without connectors.

What is required:
  • 2 MQS female pins per HS
  • A MQS crimp tool
Preparing these E88 hallsensors is easy going: 8) :?
  • Remove the zip tie from the hydraulic ram, that fixes the rear hall sensors plug. Take a photo before removing it!
  • Both hall sensors are clipped into the right hydraulic ram in the trunk. You can unmount it by pushing a tiny screwdriver between the ram and the HS housing
  • Shorten the 2 wires of each new hall sensor according to the lenghts of the old hall sensors, they are different
  • Crimp a new pin on each wire
  • Twist both wires to get the wiring a bit more compact
  • Plug both wires into a new housing.
  • Important: pin orientation is according to he old hall sensors - brown to brown, colour to colour!!. One old HS has a yellow wire, the new one is red. Don't mind, just colour to colour
  • Don't forget to place a new zip tie sorrowly(!) around the hydraulic ram to fix the plug and the 2x2 wires as initially removed

Good to know..thnx
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

So I done this today and still have the same problem. You seem to be “the roof guy”. Could it be a problem with the ram?

Once again, this is absolutely not acceptable from my point of view.

It seems, that I always have to explain in every post, what's the difference between a How-To and an individual discussion. This topic is a How-To.

RobbiZ4 wrote: Mon Sep 09, 2024 4:36 pm This topic is definitely not intended to discuss individual problems or to post unwanted nonsense as before!
And, to be honest, why did you quote this complete post? That's nonsense.

Hello - thanks for sharing.

Do you happen to know the part# for the connector? Or, can you re-use the one from the old HS?

The old one can be re-used by unpinning the 2 wires from the old HS.

Why not just solder the wires and do away with connectors that could cause more trouble.
Mind you it helps if you can these days get your hands on good solder, not the rubbish from China.

Well, that's indeed not everybodys hobby and favourite tool.

Never had any trouble with these connectors except, anybody already touched it the wrong way. :D

⌛ Prepare E88 hall sensors for E89 use

Post by TBDL » Fri Nov 01, 2024 9:59 pm

I did this yesterday, easy fix and a 30min job to get the roof properly working again.

Call me lazy, but rather than crimping on connectors etc. I simply just chopped off the old connector and soldered the new HS onto it, trimming to the same length as the old sensor cables. Brown to brown, yellow to red. Clip in the HS, fresh cable ties and all done.

Part number for the HS I used was 54347190735 at a cost of £14.30. Far preferable to the £190.74 they wanted for 54377224679.

Picture of the sensor location in case it helps anyone reading this how to guide:
