Now.. I know I'm not famous for changing cars very often but I am considering buying a new car (or two) and would like some recommendations:

Always fun for 'car people' IMHO.

Criteria:
Estate car (not an SUV thing I can't stand them). The bigger inside the better.
Petrol (as I do a lot of very short journeys)
2016 or newer
50k or less
Must have sat nav and parking sensors
Must be fun..I don't want a 100hp washing machine.
Budget is around £15k, give or take a couple of bags of sand.

I have a car in mind, but any suggestions?

I had a Passat Estate TSI 2 litre AWD. Loads of room and quite quick off the mark. Not looked at prices recently though.

That's not going to be easy with your desired criteria, my choices don't include the Ford Focus as you don't remind me of a chav :D
1) BMW 3 series MSport estate https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310062738856?sort=price-desc&advertising-location=at_cars&body-type=Estate&exclude-writeoff-categories=on&fuel-type=Petrol&make=BMW&maximum-mileage=60000&min-engine-power=150&postcode=HU15%202SL&price-to=16000&year-from=2016&fromsra
2) Audi A4 2.0 TFSI SLine https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202311063699606?sort=price-desc&advertising-location=at_cars&body-type=Estate&exclude-writeoff-categories=on&fuel-type=Petrol&make=Audi&maximum-mileage=60000&min-engine-power=150&postcode=HU15%202SL&price-to=16000&year-from=2016&fromsra
But if you can stretch to a bit more then
3) Volvo V60 T4 https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202311113858626?sort=price-desc&advertising-location=at_cars&body-type=Estate&exclude-writeoff-categories=on&fuel-type=Petrol&make=Volvo&maximum-mileage=60000&min-engine-power=150&postcode=HU15%202SL&price-to=20000&year-from=2016&fromsra
Good shout on the Passat
4) Volkswagen Passat 2.0 DSG https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202310233272641?sort=price-desc&advertising-location=at_cars&body-type=Estate&exclude-writeoff-categories=on&fuel-type=Petrol&make=Volkswagen&maximum-mileage=60000&min-engine-power=150&model=Passat&postcode=HU15%202SL&price-to=20000&year-from=2016&fromsra

Had a mk5 ST two years ago. Great car but been there, done that. The mk4 is within budget but is a little 'chavvy'. :D

Skoda Octavia VRs?
Head, hit, nail on the!
Best VFM for what I want, as far as I can see. I was thinking of another Mazda6 estate, as I have had two and they are great, but the petrol is a n/a 2 litre so is a bit 'boring'.

Would you own it for that long though?
We had a boring 1 litre Octavia which was kept for three years (leased, mind). Great car just needed a bit more poke, so the VRs (with the Golf GTi engine) seems just the ticket.

Also forgot to mention in the criteria;
Must be manual. Not keen on those automagic thingies. Also the wife flatly refuses to drive an auto.

It’s Seat cousin looks canny too

Good shout. More non-identical twin!
Didn't think of a Cupra. I prefer the looks of the Skoda, but if the Seat is cheaper for the equivalent, then definitely wouldn't discount it.

What about a Superb estate, bigger again than the Octavia and I think there’s a big engined 4 wheel drive version

Hmm, 3.6V6 but might be DSG only

I have (almost) settled on a Passat or a Mondeo. Still both are bloody expensive for what they are, but that is the world we seem to live in.

I have always had a soft spot for a 'Mondy'. Had 3 in the past, as well as 2 Sierras before them.

I'd rather have an Octavia than a Passat.

You could probably get an Insignia way cheaper than an equivalent Mondeo as Vauxhalls don't seem to be nearly as popular as Fords, but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them as a daily.

But tomorrow you'll probably want a Jaguar XF!

A Passat does look a lot nicer than the Skoda but then the Skoda is cheaper. And great gearboxes to go with it (manual obviously )

You would think so, but not the case anymore.
There is a strange situation (that I have never seen before) in the 'car market', where almost any car of the same age and mileage is virtually the same money, no matter what it is. The only ones I have found that are significantly more expensive are the equivalent Audreys, Mercs and BMs.

I have looked at everything, as the petrol, manual estate car is quite a rare beast. Renault Meganes are as pricey as the others, so are Insignias, and even Astras.

All are extremely expensive. £14-18k for a five to seven year old 'average' family estate car is a lot IMO.

The Mondeo that has caught my eye is a 2017 Titanium spec 1.5 ecoboost with 30k miles. £14k! :o

I'd do a little research on the 1.5 ecoboost engine first, I'm sure there are issues with them
