Z4 e85/e86 and z4 e89 wheels question

Post by Alfiedog » Fri Oct 13, 2023 9:17 am

Hi quick question, why do wheels from a e85/86 not recommend for a e89 when all bolt holes match up is it simply because of ET number , even though a spacer kit can alter the ET difference? Thanks in advance

Simple answer is yes. ETs are different.
But I have seen E89 wheels on an E85. They sit further out so no need for spacers, but they do seem to fit the arches quite nicely.
Obviously going from an E85 onto an E89 would require spacers.

Z4 e85/e86 and z4 e89 wheels question

So original wheels that were on my z4 e89 were front et29 rear et40 style 326 19inch wheels So the ones I like that are advertised for e85/86 z4 are et47 front and et50 rear ( please see photo of wheel ) bolt holes look same spec , question is do I take a gamble and fit these with a spacing kit so they are similar equivalent to the original ET spec

I'm not sure and older set of Z4/E46 wheels would look correct on the newer E89?
Maybe they would, actually...

Thast's a lot of spacing needed.
You could look for those same wheels from an older 5-series (E60??) they are ET20 and only 8" width front and rear.
Wife's E85 has them on the rear and they fill the arch perfectly.
Would need 225/45 front and 245/40 rear ideally.

By adding a 20mm spacer to the front the ET goes from et47 to et 27 which is then only 2mm difference from original et spec of et29 on the front and by adding a 12mm spacer to the rear it goes from et50 to et38 which again is just 2mm difference from original et spec and I guess the absolute goal here is to get as close to manufacture et specifications my only concern is this. Are all original BMW 5 stud wheels absolutely identical ( ie all 5 holes line up perfectly so as to bolt to the hub ?) I’m guessing that they are all identical only difference is the ET number

I actually think the wheels pictured above are a really nice looking wheel and would suit the e89 very nicely please cast your opinion on them and let me know if you think they would look great on the e89 thanks everyone

I kind of already did. Nice wheels but why mess about with spacers (especially 20 on the front!) when you can get the same design with an ET that works without them.

What he said. And for the avoidance of doubt the E85 and E89 both have the same 5 x 120 bolt pattern, so the wheels are interchangeable.

I fitted a set of 18" E89 wheels to my previous Coupe and they worked really well - filled the arches nicely. :)

I'm not a fan of spacers so if I really wanted Style 135 wheels for an E89 I'd definitely look for a set off an E60 5 Series for the better offsets.

Mind you when I had them on my first Coupe I did find them a PITA to clean so I prefer fewer spokes and no narrow gaps now!
Coupes because stunning!

have you considered style 193/MV3 wheels from an E9x? they have the correct offsets to pair up nicely with an E89 and they look pretty decent, in my opinion...

Hi , I have considered the MV3 and see the offset is more favorable. They do look nice but I prefer the mv2 . I use the website “will they fit “ people have suggested the E60 mv2 wheels with et20 but the only problem with those they protrude the front wheel arch by 9mm 🤔 So currently I’m sticking with the original set up I have , appreciate your input
