H/L Condensation

Post by Sladester100 » Sat Sep 23, 2023 6:48 pm

So you may have remembered the mild bit of rain most of the country got the other evening. Thanks for some hurricane off the Atlantic coast somewhere I believe,

Anyway that evening (Wednesday) I was driving back in what seemed like a river in the sky and noticed after I had some condensation in my left (N/S) headlight! It was incredibly humid and wet so didn’t think too much of it

Today I noted this when I went out to my car

This afternoon I parked facing the sun thinking it might help it dry out.
This evening I have this;

I also noted a tiny bit on the O/S (which hasn’t photographed well)

Do I have an issue here or is this simply part of the weather change. I’ve never noticed it before over the last few years of ownership.

My G29 lives outside but I haven't experienced any condensation in the headlights in the 5 months I have owned it.

The latter pictures show the condensation decreasing (looks worse but the droplets are much smaller), so it is evaporating.

Headlights are not hermetically sealed (quite). LED headlights don't get very hot (on the business end) so it can take a while to evaporate. It will go.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

That’s made me feel a bit better. Just couldn’t work out why it happened and I’ve never seen it before. But might just be one of those things I guess.

If you are under warranty if get that sorted. Lights should not condensate like that unless there is an issue. Not an expert on the G29 but on the E85/6 this is caused by an old seal at the rear. If left on treated on the E85/6 the water drains into the ballast and kills it on Xenons. Not sure what the long term consequences are on G29 but why take the risk?

To be fair I didn’t check the back of the units for any damage / marks or anything so will do that tomorrow.

I’m just taking out an extended warranty as the manufacturer one has expired so will see what it’s like in a month when it kicks in.

In a German forum the same issue was solved as follows (translated with google):
My dealer used the photos I took to submit a goodwill request to BMW.
This was approved, the SW was removed, dried and reinstalled.
This is probably always the first approach; If moisture occurs again, a new SW is installed.
Perhaps this helps at your dealer.
