Positive to the jump terminal on the firewall as you know, but you're correct that you can't reach the cars earth stub so when I've used it I've clamped the earth to the strut brace nuts or somewhere down by the gearbox. And yes, don't connect to the battery, always use the positive connector in the engine bay.
Thanks John

Tim.
Have you still got that blue 135i Tim....? No reason other than idle nosy curiosity....
Yes John, just hit 900 miles  July 2016 build, still smells new inside, it's the 140i, had a silver 135i before.

Thanks for the info John. I have one of these which I have never needed to use, thankfully. I leave it plugged into a USB port in the garage so it is always ready should I need it. Now I know exactly where to attach the cables

Best to keep it in the boot in case you get stuck away from home. I have a reminder in my calendar to charge it once every two months. Ironically, you can charge it from a USB port in the car!

Yep they're good bits of kit Ian, and tbh personally I hadn't considered keeping it in the car as Don says, good idea if you're disciplined enough to charge it regularly....which I'm not, but should be.... much better than a set of jump leads like in't olden days...
