Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

nblu wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 7:49 pm Ah I see, I was using the SG_CODEREIN, but I assumed I needed to code the HU/RAD2. I'll focus on coding CAS and NFRM.

I suspect my sp-datens weren't set up perfectly either, which is more likely the reason.

Finally, I'm honoured to have a response from @BMW Z4 Mods. I've been inspired by your youtube videos to try some retrofits on my car. I was really tempted to do the CIC but went with the Android screen instead.

Thanks,
Nick
Yes code the CAS & NFRM and see how that goes, RAD2 is difficult to do, but see how you get on.

I'm glad you like my videos, I try to make them informative as much as I can
Yes the CIC retrofit is a big complicated and time consuming job to do, and to be fair it was installed over a number of sittings, what with test fittings and pre assembled wiring looms. It's not for the faint hearted, but I love it and am happy with it. I'll be finishing editing the Combox retrofit video soon to go with it, along with a few others this year as well.

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

Post by nblu » Fri May 26, 2023 4:15 pm

I've been having a go at coding in the sunshine. What I'm trying in ncs expert is running sg_coderein and adding the VO $654

The radio has updated but is no longer showing the DAB option. I think I'm making progress, but I'm wondering if I will need to do more as I'm adding DAB with a DAB HU rather than adding the module in the boot.

Am I right in understanding that the NFRM contains the bulk of the configuration? It took much longer to code than the CAS.

Thanks,
Nick

Always code CAS and NFRM as FA_Write, only SG_Coderian for RAD

If you have coded CAS & NFRM with $654, and with FA_Write, then I can't see why it would remove the option from the headunit. $654 works with the built-in headunit as well as the boot module.

Yes NFRM has a lot more coding within it

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

Post by nblu » Fri May 26, 2023 5:28 pm

Thanks Dave, I’ll give it another go. Reading the other forums I’ve read that a sg_reset on RAD2 and a wait might be necessary. The battery was starting to run low so I didn’t do anything after the fa_write.

I was reading the fsw_psw file and that module has some very interesting options.

Update: After reading the file the DAB options are active so it looks like the VO option has generated the correct trace file. It is just a matter of getting the radio to apply it. I'll get the battery charged and try again.

Thanks,
Nick

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

I think I understand what is happening now. My Z4 has a production date of #0609 and the radio was only released in 2010. I’ve probably got to adjust the date or go for another option. Is this worth trying or would I be better off waiting for the combox video and keeping the dates as they are?

Arrr yes, change the date. Then once its all working change the date back for CAS & NFRM (FA_Write) but not RAD

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

Post by nblu » Sat Jun 03, 2023 10:20 pm

Just a quick update, I've been away, but I'm back looking into the coding again. I've managed to RA_Write CAS and NFRM followed by SG_Reset on the RAD2, and I have DAB again. I will try adding Bluetooth next although I understand the radio can't do Bluetooth audio.

Edit: Bluetooth is now coded as well.

Thank you for all your help.

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

A quick update, I have DAB working with the genuine antenna. I need to tidy up but I’m pleased this works.

Next up PDC while I have the bumper off.

Thanks,
Nick

Well done … A for effort
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

Post by Philz75 » Wed Jun 21, 2023 5:52 pm

Been following your progress as I would like DAB. At the moment I have the professional stereo with Bluetooth but just AM/FM.
Am I right in thinking that if I buy this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204372319486 ... media=COPY

And buy a DAB aerial then I should be good to go? How do I do the coding stuff?

The radio seems to be an equivalent part to the radio I installed. In terms of antenna the easiest option is a windscreen DAB antenna. This sticks to the windscreen and you would run the wire down behind the head unit. I went the difficult path which needs a cable to run from the HU to the rear bumper. as I was inspired by Dave and never liked the visible antenna.

Another way which might be cheaper is to buy the DAB module (#9176958) which fits in the boot. These link to the MOST fibre bus in the car and can be fitted using bracket #65159136696. I wanted the Bluetooth head unit so I ruled out that option.

In terms of getting the coding there are sellers on eBay who will code the radio for you which I might be tempted to do. If the car the radio came from had the same configuration it might not need adjusting.

Doing it using ISTA requires a K+DCAN cable and a working ISTA installation. You cannot code the radio directly without an ICOM interface. I’ve not gone that far yet but I wonder if someone else could explain. There are several guides on the process online. Many of independent specialists can do it. There is one in reading quoting £75 for coding a module.

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
Nick

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

Thanks for the info. Not all of it made sense (yet) as I've only had the car a fortnight so I'm still learning.
Just to check I understand this correctly. I can just add the DAB module (9176958) and mount it to the bracket (65159136696) and then fit a DAB aerial to the windscreen? I don't need a new head unit if I do that?
If I went down this route I presume I still need to get it coded?

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

Post by nblu » Wed Jun 21, 2023 10:32 pm

Hi,
Those are the main components you would need. The main complication with the BMW module is that it needs connecting to the MOST (Multimedia fibre) bus. I’ve not got experience doing that but I’m sure someone on here can explain how they have done it.

I would also consider using a vin decoder to double check what options you have as it might help. I’ve used this one but I understand there are others. https://www.mdecoder.com/

Finally, I would recommend watching AnubisZeds YouTube videos before buying anything as it will give you an idea what is involved in a retrofit.

Thanks,
Nick

Bluetooth and DAB retrofit

I’ve gone with the mr 12 volt most dab unit in the boot

This is linked to the cic via coding to have cd multi tuner

Have the stick on in the window not visually appealing

Considered the boot aerial and still am or the unit online at 110

Picks up lots of stations but as Dave has said before signal not great

What’s the reception like with the aerial in the bumper?
