Misfire

Yanked out the plug in from the OBD port. Cleared the codes using my mates Code reader.
Said that there was a crankshaft position fault.

Car started up perfectly. Went for a 6 miles run, the car drove fine. In fact, seemed far smoother than previously.

Went for another run, car again, drove perfectly.

It might be that the plug in, which was said to be some sort of performance and fuel mod, was at fault!!
Well that could be a cheap fix then.
Just don’t try to sell the thing on here :poke:

Hope so, it’s due to go in to the garage I bought it from this week so that they could have a look, but I’m too impatient!!

Misfire

Afternoon all.

Back to my misfire, which, remarkably, after 150 miles or so, has reappeared.

Misfire, followed by poor running, kangarooing, then EML.

I’ll need to get the codes read, but I’m Guessing it’s the crankshaft position sensor failing. As they were the codes thrown up last time around.

It’s turning in to a puzzler. Had a local garage take a look, nothing obvious.

Fault codes threw a variety of timing related codes up.

When it begins to misfire, begin lurching etc, if I pull over and turn the engine off, it restarts and drives fine for a while.
Thinking it might be a sticking vanos solenoid.

Has anyone had anything similar? Have booked in to a BMW specialist for them to take a look.

I think its just good practice to take out your vanos solenoids to clean with some brake cleaner. One less item you could eliminate if they're not faulty

 cheers. Car is booked in for an oil service tomorrow at my local Indy. What a nightmare trying to get an appointment at a garage!!
Hopefully they can pinpoint the problem.

If I let the car warm up for a couple of minutes, I don’t have a problem. Depending on their findings, vanos solenoids and check valves/filter are on the to do list.
Incidentally, there does t seem much room to get at the vanos solenoid valves??

Entirely done by feel! One thing about wielding spanners is you develop eyes in your fingertips.

Took the Zed to my local Indy garage today for an oil service and a diagnosis of the misfire. One of the coil packs was fitted incorrectly and not properly seated. The codes indicated a problem with the vanos inlet solenoid so this was removed, cleaned and tested. It was apparently fine. Apparently they can be problematic if oil pressure is low or the incorrect grade of oil is mixed/used.

Seemed fine earlier, hopefully it’ll be okay in the morning.

And there is a lesson for us all.......
While everyone says 'get the codes first' we need to not overlook all the basic checks we would have done automatically on cars a few years ago.
Hope that cures it for you.
