Sometimes you wish you never started.
So thought i would knock down and clean rear brake calipers. Wanted to see what was involved replacing the splash plate.
Caliper off, remove the ebrake motor..................and hydraulic fluid pours out :(

I suspect me putting Dot 5.1 in the system which buggered up the master cylinder seals has also rotted the rear caliper seals.
New calipers are over £200 :o so have ordered 2 sets of rear caliper seals, £24 delivered.

I will clean the ebrake motor with some contact cleaner.
Now got to go all back together so i can dump it at work.

Take the opportunity to also replace brake lines with braided.
They might also have been "Attacked".

5.1 should be ok

Chemically the same as 4

Well seemed to have caused host of problems.

First spotted when master cylinder brake seals failed last year, fluid came out black, to me rotted seals.
Now fluid in the eBrake motor, more rotted O ring seals on the adjuster in piston.
Just cleaned wheel, fluid had dripped onto wheel left a mark, but has come off.
I have ever since replacing the ABS module seen a voltage problem on obd on the eBrake system, but works fine.
Thinking now fluid in eBrake is throwing that code.
The gear inside uses a rubber belt, so that's probably rotting.

Might also having the knock effect in the electrics of losing TPMS and the sport mode on warnings, something is causing that.
I assume braking system needs to know the status of the eBrake.
Code when ABS fixed.

Well reading that 5.1 is compatible.
So is 95k miles the limit for brake seals?
Perhaps we have to religiously change fluid every 2 years.
All the old banger's i had i would not be surprised if i was the first to change the fluid.
Never seen the old fluid drain out black on all the cars i have owned.

Problem is time passes so quick, don't realise 2 years gone by.
Just realised had my current motorbike 10 years.

Dot 3,4 and 5.1 are all hygroscopic…so that’s why it’s a 2 year change cycle…you (and many others) are on your own at 10 years..
