I'd imagine this is a revisionist view of history..

BMW makes lots of B58 engines for all its many models..Toyota takes a very small share for one model..

Given the time it takes to work through from R+D into production I suspect that the extensive changes were well inhand before and if Toyota expressed any view..

FWIW and IMHO..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

As far as I'm aware Toyota had zero input in the engine and drivetrain, could be wrong of course.
