Lazy Engine…

Post by cyrussmith » Tue Apr 25, 2023 6:00 am

Newbie so not sure where to post this so but….

New owner of a 2004 Z4 automatic. Whenever I floor the gas the engine revs up to around 4-6 rpm(50mph)… and then dies? The engine still runs, but I rpm’s drop to around 1k and I get no response from the gas pedal. After I’ve pulled off the road the engine will keep bouncing from 1-1.5k and shake the car slightly. However, after turning the car off and back on, it runs just fine. (So long as I don’t floor it again.) Any ideas? I’m truly befuddled. Thanks

Also I should mention I occasionally smell some slight burning after driving. Not sure if it’s related but could be a clue to someone more savvy than me🤔

Codes, codes and thrice codes. Get a copy of INPA (readily downloadable) and a BMW configured USB diagnostics lead (eBay) and see what errors are stored.

Without that it's huge amounts of guesswork (and it doesn't sound like an "oh that's the XYZ" problem.)
