E89 side skirt refusing to be cleaned!

Post by noz85 » Fri Apr 07, 2023 3:46 pm

My E89 side skirt is grubby. Despite vigorous cleaning it never looks clean. It's obviously a crud catcher due to design and air flow. As the car is approaching 70k miles, a lot of grime has been able to build up i guess.

Has anyone else noticed this with their cars, and has any body successfully removed it and got the side skirts clean and shiny again? I will post a pic after I have washed the car.

Post a pic of it so we can diagnose. The side skirts do get paint damage due to their position.

They are susceptible to a bit of 'gravel rash'. If this symptom is the case, there will be speckles in the paint where it's been damaged and may not clean as it's removed the paint. My E89 is black so very obvious, particularly at the rear. I had them re-painted by a bodyshop.

Probably road / gravel rash as pointed out above although difficult to say without more details or photos. If it is gravel rash then best to repaint and apply PPF.

My side skirts have a mottled area which must be the pebbles denting the paint..looks like they use a lot of plasticiser to make sure it just doesn’t chip and fall off…
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…
A very modified Atacama Yellow 35is

Not sure if its gravel rash? Perhaps it is. But it's perfectly smooth

Excellent news. Thanks for reviewing the picture. The passenger side is due to be resprayed as it has a nasty mark on from a high curb. Going to have to get a matching pair then! :D
