Steering wheels - interchangeable options
Hi guys!
As I am currently making my 23i a bit more luxurious as a cruiser, I've been thinking about steering wheels.
With the LCI indicators added and a cruise control module (Thanks Zed! Your video on it was amazing!) I am thinking about a new wheel.
I know some models come with a heated wheel option, some on the wheel and on theZ4 it's on the steering column.
Does anyone have any experience with changing the wheel and a reccomend model to achieve the heated option?
Kind regards
James

We looked at it..you obviously need the steering wheel, in the right version depending whether it’s an auto or not plus the lower plastic steering wheel trim and the associated button..so it’s a parts bin exercise..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…

Love my heated wheel!
I would guess there is wiring too - may already be prezent / may not.
Then coding.

Well, I was thinking of getting a compatible wheel with the heated button on the wheel itself, if anyone knew of one or had done so before.
Mostly because I've already bought the column cover for the cruise control

Different clock spring too - plus the additional wiring loom required.
I've got the steering wheel shroud and button sitting upstairs in the loft, for sale on here somewhere.
Heated wheel itself is the tricky but. Very rare to see them for sale, especially with LCI paddles.

Could an M sport 2011 model be integrated and coded? Lots of heated wheels on Ebay

Yes it can be done, I know because I've done it All video'd and will be on my channel at some point this year, alas I'm a tad busy with other stuff at the moment to do this though.
The models with the switch on the wheel are F series, so there is a compatibility issue to start with there.
So to do it the normal way you'd need the following...
Steering wheel - Auto or Manual
Specific clock spring.
Lower cowl
Switch
A few connectors and a bit of wiring.
I did sort out a deal to get hold of a manual OE E89 steering wheel, but after doing the deal I've never seen him online since, which is a real shame. So instead I've actually fitted one from an E93, it was very battered so was very cheap, I've refurbished it and it's looking quite nice now.
So to wire it up all you need is a 12v+ and a 12v-, and that's it, no coding! I tapped off my cigar lighter, with an in-line fuse then ran it round to the steering column, connected it into the new 12pin connector into the clock spring then off to the 3pin plug for the switch and basically that's it you're good to go. You will probably need to reset the Steering Angle Sensor, as you've fitted a replacement clock spring.
I've been using mine over the winter and it's been great

I've been wanting to do this mod for years but there's so little info online about it and it's not cheap so other mods took priority. Plus finding the right wheel online is a long waiting game. Maybe one day soon though...

Yeah I've not done everything. I work on the principle that I'll do it if I want it and if it doesn’t cost a fortune.
Alas they have all been delayed as I'm currently working on something else which is taking all my spare time, but that should be completed over the Easter break
