Yeah wow he's mega brave to have put the two outer suction cups at least partly over the creases of the roof bubbles. I placed the unit at that spot and was not convinced at all they would sustain grip over the edges.
Went fine yesterday, 2 hours each way, no issues with the rack at all, and I didn't hang about on the motorway after an initial period of careful rear view mirror gazing. Plus lots of very broken crumbly road surfaces in and around Afan with lateral wobbling, sharp little diagonal speed bumps near car park, potholes, etc. Held on firm no probs at all.
I effectively forgot it was on the car on the way back. Would definitely recommend.

Good feedback Owen, thanks.
I suppose you choose you're own risk on this, rear screen bonding strength or suction on the roof. You could try the roof, leave them on for 24 hours and check them before adding a bike, that would answer the suction question.
Thanks for the review

Yeah it's a good idea, 24 hours would give some indication, just not open it up to the NVH/headwind/potholes the suckers would be subject to on the road. Tricky one, seeing how easily they pop off when you remove them by getting a finger nail under the edge of the sucker, I think I'd rather put my faith in BMW's rear screen bonding.
So far I've had no reason to think it isn't capable anyway.
Best

On the surface, that's ideally the way anyone would want to mount their bike using a suction mount. I can understand if the OP has concerns regarding suction on the double bubble roof, but unless it was losing air due to the curvature of the roof I can see it working and functioning as intended.Dark Diggler wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2023 9:24 am How did the bike rack perform on the Afan trip OP? I looked at the chain over your boot lip, it looks close on the 1st image, did you have any issues? I found this on the rock bros suction rack, this chap mounted it on the roof near the windscreen.

Sorry I should have added, the rack comes with some very good little velcro straps, which both locks the crank in position, and can go around the upper and lower chain runs to pinch them together and thus lift it up.
I think I'd be more concerned for the rear screen if the majority of the bike's weight wasn't being supported nicely by the rear sucker on the boot.

We definitely need a bike thread. Haven’t been to Afan, for a while and have only done bike Park Wales since lockdown; how were the Afan trails?
Hopefully the chain was taught enough that it didn’t flex onto the bodywork as a chain would make light work of your paint!

Yeah Afan trails good, did the red route and was nowhere near as wet as I was expecting, it does drain well up there. Dead Sheep Gully and the sections before and after that quite bumpy on the Cove Stiffee, but then I probably hadn't dropped my tyre pressures enough and it is a hardtail on 26" wheels so par for the course. Will take the Norco next time!
Yeah when the chain is cinched up it clears the rear spoiler by several inches, and can't bounce in transit, so the paint is safe thankfully.

I've had two frames on a saris bones rack and managed to squeeze 4 29er wheels in the boot!
Picture here with the one frame. It's a faff but you can still get the roof down!

First few times at Afan I too had a very unforgiving hardtail but it was huge fun. The hardtail I built recently is a lot more forgiving and faster but you can’t beat my full suss for smashing down Blade.Secondtothird wrote: ↑Tue Mar 28, 2023 2:20 pm Yeah Afan trails good, did the red route and was nowhere near as wet as I was expecting, it does drain well up there. I’ll pass on your Cove. Having ridden one many moons ago, my ageing body would not be happy
