E86 rear wing rust. Is this a cost effective solution?
Regurgitating those old thread. I saw a post recently, not sure if it was here or somewhere else that had people posting photos of the rust bubbles on the E86 wings.
A question and answer I have yet to read is…is it rusting from the inside, or just surface rust under the paint?
Just wondering if I sand the paint back to try to fix myself, am I likely to uncover a bloody great big hole???

Someone needs to start making replacement front wings and rear quarter panels out of a non metal material. I miss my first car a Reno Clio with plastic front wings. You could rest your arse on them without a care in the world and they would pop back out

They rust from inside out. Water sits inbetween the plastic brakets.chanlon1 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 7:37 pm Regurgitating those old thread. I saw a post recently, not sure if it was here or somewhere else that had people posting photos of the rust bubbles on the E86 wings.

I’ve just replaced both my rears for new.
If you run down and fill the rust will always come back

This is what happens on the E85 Rear wing…starts on the inside and first you know ,is when it penetrates the outside This picture is where it joins the Side skirt.

Where on the wing does the rust appear?
Z4MC - heavily fettled for track use
Lotus Exige - sensible daily driver on the mods slippery slope
Westfield SEiW - in hibernation
Modified RS4 Avant - back in Blighty
S2000 GT - gone

On the E85 on the rear wings where the Side skirt joins …as well as where the rear wing joins the rear bumper…water and muck sits on the joint lips

I managed to get them slightly cheaper. But I had to wait 6 weeks for one side.
Looked for quite a while for good used ones but they rarely come up for sale

That looks horrible! Mine is bubbling on the outside pretty much where that photo shows. Its two bubbles under the paint about the size of a 5p coin on the passengers side maybe abit higher than the top of that rust bubble in your photo.
Is it worth messing with? squirting some lanoguard in through the plastic access hole in the door jambs hopefully to stop it getting worse through the winter + Keeping the salt rinsed off the car. Im doing about 200miles a week and give it a "touchless wash" at the local petrol station every week when I can.
Anything that can be done to stop it getting bigger/spreading at least until the summer when I can figure out what to do. Ive spent quite a lot of money on the car and would like to keep it but am aware that I potentially have some very expensive repairs coming up on the horizon so not sure keeping it will make much financial sense any more may need to ask the advice of the forum when the time comes but thats a different topic.
Mines an E85 for the purposes of the thread/record keeping.

Like you Matty, mine is exactly the same. Now having seen the behind picture, I doubt cutting the metal out and welding won’t be an option. I didn’t realise there was the plastic clip that caused it.
Maybe once a new or used wing is sorted, just slap on loads of hammerite or something on the inside to prevent it in the future???
If we know where the issue stems from, then we know where to focus attention on.
I’m always looking out for used wings, but the more I think about it, it might be better to just take the hit on new ones.
I’m assuming new ones are still available, if a price has been quoted here??

Your probably looking at close to £950 for a new wing with paint, second hand is probably a better bet.chanlon1 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 14, 2023 7:59 pm Like you Matty, mine is exactly the same. £608 inc Vat + probably about £250 - 350 for paint

EDIT: The E86 Coupe wing seems to be cheaper than the roadster? £475 inc vat https://www.sytnerstevenagebmwparts.co. ... 27223.html

Rust free wings can be had for around £100…if you can find in your colour…add £250 for 2 x rear wings to get painted.
Best is to catch the rust early…remove the rear wheel and plastic wheel liner and thourghly clean and then rust proof …I have seen tons of high mileage cars with no rust ….but then they where probably garaged.
The edges of the front and back wheel arches are another rust spot area.
But generally no other rust zones on the bodywork.
