Rolex repair

Post by ronk » Mon Feb 06, 2023 5:29 pm

After a couple of poor services at independent watch repairers, I decided to put Mrs K’s Datejust into Rolex via Goldsmiths for a proper service as it wasn’t keeping very good time - they (Rolex) eventually came back with an eye watering estimate - it needing pointers, face, date dial etc - i couldn’t see why but they had the watch so I was in a strong position to argue

I think they may have seen it’s been elsewhere and penalised me?

Apart from the stupidly high repair costs, they said it will take 12/14 weeks to be returned.
This estimate has now been increased to 26 weeks!

So I bought a 35is with all the toys to play with.

Rolex tend to return them to as new condition rather that just service them from what I've heard.

My GMT has gone into Prestons in Guildford for a service and was told straight away it would be away for 24 weeks. The service started at £650 but with all the bits that need replacing its now... £1600. Its not been serviced for the 17yrs I've owned it, so when you break it down its not too bad.

I would only use Rolex if the Watch may be sold on one day, other than that get an accredited Rolex Service repair. With Rolex they insist on replacing stuff that does not need replacing which can hit values. My 16800 Sub went in to Rolex St James they changed the hands, crystal and dial which now makes the Watch £2000 under what it would be worth had they just serviced it

Their charges:-

Full service £580.00
New crown £40.00
New dial £350.00
(dial and hands tarnished)
New hands £79.00
Date indicator £83.00

How the dial and hands are tarnished beats me!

I agree - Robbery!

The Watch had been into a place in Durham City with a good reputation - it was good for a while then it went kaput after a year - something went on the crown mech - it was corrected but needing a repair so soon, I lost faith with them

I’ve had to just bite the bullet on this occasion.

Ps There was no sign of any water ingress and she never subjected it to any harsh useage - I suspect they are seeing a none Rolex repair?

The other point going with a Rolex approved service centre is you do get a two year warranty with the service. I wouldn't normally go 'main dealer' but in this instance I think its worth it.

Value wise I think it's worth it. We willingly pay crazy service charges for our cars which value wise are usually less than a Rolex.
I have had older watches serviced and returned with the original dials and hands to keep their value but I know they will delete
any non genuine parts and replace with original. I usually decline the polishing service with no problem. Talk to them and if they
refuse doing it your way go to another one, it's your money and they need it.

Duncan at Genesis also gives two year warranty with all his work.

Its an investment if you look at what you paid 17 years ago and compare to a like for like pre owned GMT now, you’re quids in and will have a 2 year warranty and your watch will look new again after the light refurb they will give it.
