Am I missing something - I thought deleting the vanos just made it less torquey when 'off-cam', with no real effect in torque/hp when 'on-cam'?
I just thought Vanos was deleted on pure track or race cars because it was another thing to go wrong, a fairly easy (albeit fairly small) weight saving, and because available torque lower in the revs was irrelevant as you're flat out all the time when racing anyway...? Someone please correct me if I'm misinformed please!

partly that but you can rev these things to the moon without then vanos in place and of course supporting mods...Ed Doe wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 12:37 pmAm I missing something - I thought deleting the vanos just made it less torquey when 'off-cam', with no real effect in torque/hp when 'on-cam'?

It's usually done to enable running of very high lift cams like 304/296 with a standalone ecu, you can't really tune them properly with the Vanos in place.Ed Doe wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 12:37 pmAm I missing something - I thought deleting the vanos just made it less torquey when 'off-cam', with no real effect in torque/hp when 'on-cam'?

I'm not so sure - my understanding is the S54 already has very high piston speeds (4773.33 ft/minute) as a consequence of being relatively long-stroked (bore 87 mm x stroke 91 mm) which is quite unusual in a high-revving engine.... I'd be quite wary of making it rev much harder than Stock...!!
Aah ok that makes sense - there's really not a lot you can do to make lumpy cams work nicely down low - I'd imagine trying to get the vanos to work would be a bit of a headache!

I think it's more that the very high valve lift requires the vanos to be deleted to avoid over travel. I may be wrong but I think the rev limit would normally be raised as the cams will make best power higher than 8k. You'll need uprated pistons, valve springs/seats/springs etc going down this route anyway so the increased rev limit isn't an issue so much.Ed Doe wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 3:25 pmI'm not so sure - my understanding is the S54 already has very high piston speeds (4773.33 ft/minute) as a consequence of being relatively long-stroked (bore 87 mm x stroke 91 mm) which is quite unusual in a high-revving engine.... No doubt the OP can tell us more accurately the thinking behind it!
