Headlight level control Rod - front

Post by True-Blue » Tue Dec 06, 2022 5:25 pm

Evening,

Has anyone changed part number 4 in the diagram below? And, if so, was it hassle or relatively simple? - looks like it should be simple, which probably means taking half of the car apart

I have tried searching the forum without success, but was maybe using the wrong search term?

Just had an annoying MOT fail on headlight aim because this part has ‘popped off’ and the tester couldn’t ‘re-fix’ it. Basically said the connector had ‘oval-ed’ and kept popping back off.

I’ve managed to order the part from Cotswold BMW, it’s more frustrating than anything tbh as it was under £15 inc delivery. Only other advisory was for rear sensor of same type which tester told me a good clean and some lubrication would sort out.

Headlight level control Rod - front

Thought it was worth updating this post just in case this happens to anyone else.

Firstly, the diagram on real.OEM is incorrect in so far as for Uk E89 these sensors are on the Drivers side of the vehicle, not the passenger side.

Secondly, the clip seen at the bottom of part 4 (the regulating rod) is a bit of a bA5tard to snap into place :headbang:

After struggling for 20 minutes or so I left it and went to have a cup of tea and a think!

I managed to resolve this by clamping the clip in place with a really strong spring clamp, that I have for holding two pieces of wood together, and then I gently teased the upper and lower part of the clip with a flat head screwdriver and adjustable wrench until it snapped into place.

Removing the old one snapped it without a lot of effort or force, so I was really conscious of not trying to break the new one during installation.

This was an easy job, but would be very easy if the clip wasn’t so bloody awkward to do up
