Hi,
After fixing the roof rattle (taping the centre peg) I was back to noise free motoring until about a week or so ago.
I'm now getting a plastic 'clunk' noise behind my head (maybe my right ear) over certain uneven roads. It doesn't sound mechanical or metallic and it is about the height of my shoulder so not likely to be suspension?
However, tonight on driving home I took a photo through the back window as I had never noticed these flaps before (and I've had the car 2 years lol) - are they in the correct position with the roof being up??
Further, any suggestions on the new noise? It sounds like a piece of plastic clunking/banging when going over potholes and is definitely one side only - just behind my right ear kind of level so far as I can tell. Any easy fixes/suggestions?

Not a roof rattle but a clunk
After i fixed all my rattles, one that appeared was the divider in the boot.
One bracket had broken.
Then the sound travels up through that open flappy thing.

I get a similar clunk from the rear right hand side over vicious sharp bumps but I think it the roof shells moving against the bump stop?

My clunk in the boot turned out to be a loose battery hold down.

Thought I had found the answer - a LONG thread on another forum concerning 'rear deck rattle' which described my problem exactly.
7 pages this guy took and several times he thought he had the answer, but ultimately he gave up and punted the car!
The boot divider in my z4 is fine, I definitely think its something to do with the plastic cover strip - I think thats the 'deck' referred to on the other forum. I'll take a look at it over the weekend in the few hours of daylight we're getting just now. The noise is infuriating and driving home from work I tried to pinpoint and it seems to be from around the seatbelt/speaker are over my right shoulder.

I had a much lighter rattle in that position..it turn out that the trim that covers the seat belt top buckle was a bit loose..there are a series of metal clips that rest in the lower plastic that the top trim is pushed onto..a couple of those metal clips were rattling…I would assume if the car trim has never been striped out it should be fine…these rattles can be frustrating to find..

I have to retract that. It was part of the issue, the main problem was the rear sway bar slipped to one side and out of the bushing. Finally fixed.

Yes most of the ‘big’ clunks seem to come from the ARB area..good to know
