Sub woofer soft boxes

Post by smorris_12 » Thu Nov 10, 2022 11:40 pm

I'm curious what the soft boxes that live around the subs in the 10 speaker sound systems. Are they just effectively wadding or are they rigid boxes with padding? I'm leaning towards the latter since the little ports connect them to elsewhere (each other?)

And do they ever come up for sale second hand? I was in BMW today and they're not even particularly expensive but I'm always looking for a bargain!

I’ve had a couple of breakers with the upgraded systems

They are big foam preformed shapes that sit in the cubby spaces

Interesting, thanks. I'll keep an eye out for a set while I work out what I want to do. Bought some subs, trying to decide what I want to do with the rest of the sound system. Will probably start with the subs and a little amp.

I am sure you could replicate fairly easily

If I get a breaker with some in I’ll take pics

Having DIY upgraded from a 6 to 10 speaker system, they're pretty critical for making the most of the enclosure and avoiding rattles

They semi-seal the enclosures (there's a hole in the back otherwise where the speaker cable enters). You should also source the plastic 'ports' that vent the individual boxes into a connecting channel between the two of them, which increases their effective volume and will enable you to get a better frequency response.

I find it fascinating that anyone designed a connecting duct into the bodywork for these.

Was there a good uplift in bass when you'd finished?

Yes. I started by sealing the existing cabinets but couldn’t get much bass extension. Much better when used as originally designed. It’s not the same a big home cinema sub, but adds useful extra punch down to 40hz or so.

Changing the fronts to the Focal AS3s was the biggest improvement through, and they punch down to a not dissimilar frequency.
