G29 Exterior Temperature Sensor Location

Post by IvorG29 » Wed Nov 02, 2022 1:17 pm

Hi guys. Newbie here, not that familiar with forums. I have searched for my question and can't find a thread on it, so forgive me if it has already been answered.

My exterior temperature displayed in the car (2019 G29) is massively high, indicating a sensor failure. I was due to have it fixed under warranty but got Covid and couldn't take the car to the dealership. By the time I recovered, the car was out of warranty (by a day) and they wouldn't fix it. I heard that usually these things are easy to replace, so I bought a new one online. However, I can't find any information relating to where the sensor is on this particular model.

Does anyone know?

Thanks,

Ivor.
Cheers,

It looks to be around the area of passenger side front bumper, possible behind the bottom small grill?

Thanks Swiftly. So it looks like you've got to remove some trim to access it... I can feel the plastic snapping and the paint scratching already.

I would be shining a torch into the grill first to see if you can see anything before I would disassemble. I think the bumper has to come off to remove the bottom grills without damage though, someone else might be able to confirm this.

Yes, I will do that. I'm actually thinking of taking it to the dealership, I don't want to damage it.

Thanks again!

For such a small job, find a local Indy to do it. Will be much cheaper than a dealership

Yep, I thought of that but I had the following worries: the local German Tech outfit are almost as expensive as the dealership and have previously ripped me off and the local guy who I use for MOTs has already told me he has no idea where the sensor is. Now I can tell him where the sensor is but I’m worried he’ll damage the bodywork!

I wasn’t that worried about it to be honest, until I read that the exterior temperature reading is used as an input to the ECU to control fuel/air mix and also feeds into the automatic climate control. I’m going to have another crack at the dealership to see if they will do it as a goodwill gesture on the basis that I reported it whilst in warranty but couldn’t get it to them because of having Covid.

Miraculously, the dealership has agreed to fix it under warranty as a gesture of goodwill. Gobsmacked. Pity I went to the expense of buying the sensor myself. Booked in tomorrow. They say it's going to take all day! No courtesy car of course.

Earlier this year I had the roundel on the boot replaced under warranty as it had moisture in it and had gone cloudy. I was at the dealership 4.5 hours. When I complained they said they had to strip the back of the boot lid out to get access to the rear of the badge. I know that's BS as the badges are adhesive (I replaced the boot one on my 640 Gran Coupe myself). Such liars. I almost reported them to BMW for that.

Anyway, thanks guys for your help and advice.

Outcome wasn't as good as expected! Some time ago, I hit a pheasant on the A11 dual carriageway at quite high speed. It was at the base of the front bumper, beneath where the vents are. It cracked the narrow bar of plastic there. I had it plastic-welded and re-sprayed. The technician at the dealership said that the sensor, which is just behind that spot, had been bent over so that it was close to one of the radiators and this was why the temperature display was erratic and often very high. So it wasn't covered by warranty. They replaced the sensor with the one I had and charged me 30 mins labour (£99).

That was a very expensive pheasant.

I can confirm though that the sensor on the 2019 G29 M40i is behind the lower front grill on the driver's side.

Cheaper than what I used to get charged by Porsche for my previous car! My wife used to work for Porsche so I got a good discount but then she left and went to VW and their standard rate went up to £220 per hour at the main dealership. I don't know whether that's what they charge everywhere but it's pretty outrageous and the service was crap (they damaged my car twice and had to re-spray it, and that was a crap job too).

Nice bike - I didn't even know BMW made sports bikes like that. I've got a Harley (cue yawns). I'd probably kill myself if I had yours...

Thanks Ivor, it's the supernaked version of the S1000RR Supersport. It does shift a wee bit.

That’s awesome. I was thinking about buying a Ducati (especially as my wife gets 20% discount as VW own Ducati!) but this is turning my head. Better not turn this into a bike forum…
