Should we be buying tyres marked with the BMW approval star marks?
I have been told that any transmission warranty claims could be rejected if non approved rubber is fitted?

if your car is fresh out the factory and still within manufacturer warranty period, then probably best to.
if your car is 15 years old, then probably not.
We have the same discussion on porsche forums about n rated tyres... quite amusing when you have owners of 22 year old cars fretting about buying n rated tyres.

To me if you have an extend warranty, it would only be a maybe but otherwise why would you pay for that when its probably no different to the the same size tyres being sold under that brand.
I think this is just a con to make you buy tyres from BMW who will be charging a fat premium on the same tyre from your local tyre centre

If you want my 99 cents worth (cos it’s worth more than a pound) I’m not sure that argument of star marked tyres is enforceable, what happens if you get a flat and need a new tyre, but the only one available is not a star marked tyre. Are you going to wait a few days for a special delivery?
The EU have passed a number of laws to protect the consumer from this warranty blackmail, car servicing is one. I’m sure that BMW state in the handbook that star marked are recommended and does not state required.

I have a bmw extended warranty on both cars. The 35is is at the Point of needing new (proper) tyres whilst the 335 xd has already had one of its rear tyres replaced due to a bulge - they replaced It with a non star marked tyre!

The star rating was only meant as a quality identification which guarantees that your transfer box on x drive models is not being wrecked by tyres with different running distances, even when wearing.
For x drives I always have bought star ratings, just not from BMW dealers

Surely if they were a requirement Bmw are obliged to tell customers of extended warranties of it....

This this is at least another reason to maybe opt for the Star marked tyre.

That's now...in the past it was pure marketing/brand alliance.Schaef wrote: ↑Thu Sep 29, 2022 2:39 pm This this is at least another reason to maybe opt for the Star marked tyre.

Just ask anyone who had the star-marked Continental SportContact M3 fitted to their Z4Ms - they were basically a BMW-fitment Continental SportContact 2, which was already a generation old from the e46 era, when BMW decided to put the same crappy tyre on a much stiffer Z4M.
They didn't even have the advantage of being hard-wearing.
