Tyres - the end of the road for the RE010s

Post by Maria1 » Thu Sep 08, 2022 3:39 pm

I have finally come to the conclusion that my "never-wear out "Bridgestone RE010s need to be sent to the scrap heap even though the economiser in me says "no". I am tired of the crashy ride (on 19" wheels), the fact that they developed a flat spot during Covid sending a dum dum dum sound through the cabin when on quiet (tarmac) roads. And, the fact that I suffered two punctures with them - more than any other car over the same sort of mileage.

My other BMW (a 240i) uses Michelin Pilot Super Sports but I couldn't cope with a £750 odd replacement cost for the zed. Not least because I don't drive it like i stole it and it is used mainly in Spain where it's not really that rainy or cold (in the south that is). As such, and having trawled the reviews I have opted for Kumho Ectsa PS91s. These are mid order - well behind the Contis and Michelins - but I couldn't get past the fact that they were over £250 cheaper for a set of four even when using Black Circles. The reviews - which were comparing performance tyres - actually thought the Kumhos were only satisfactory rather than good or excellent but I reasoned that I have had several sets of them on our bread and butter Hyundai Coupe for many years and that I felt when I got them that they transformed the handling from the Hankooks that were then on it. i am sure though that the Michelins would be better but for normal driving then I doubt if I will feel much difference. As long as they grip in the wet when travelling at reasonable pace and are predictable then I am going to be happy. Most performance tyres grip in the dry.

The only downside is that the PS91s wear out much quicker than the Michelins but then the car only does 3000 miles a year so the likelihood is that they will have developed flat spots by then anyway!

You certainly won't miss the Bridgestones!

I fitted a set of Ecsta PS71s to my Z4 last year and have been pleasantly surprised with them. :)
Coupes because stunning!

Getting rid of those bridgestones was the best thing I'd done to my zed - changed to Goodyear Assy 5s, quieter ride and seemed to get rid of that "straight ahead dead spot" when steering.

Bridgestone Tyres are being changed now. Anybody who wants them FoC can collect them from Forest of Dean tyres over the next week totally free to the collector. It seems such a shame to throw them away. All tyres have loads of tread (6mm plus and none are over five years old. The front two are two years old. Please say if you need any information.

You should put them on eBay they will sell in no time and you'll get some money back. :D

sold on Ebay to a E89 owner...... Mustn't be on this forum then! The Kumhos are now on. They are quieter and slightly more comfortable but not night and day difference but then I am still bedding them in. i suspect the handling will be better with less skitting around.

I scrapped those vile bridgestones a few months ago.
Straight on with 19" Nexen proper rubbers.
The transformation is amazing. Now I totally enjoy driving the car.
