Newish member and now owner of a Unicorn

Post by Scott Naylor » Tue Aug 23, 2022 10:20 am

Hi, I am glad to share I have purchased a Unicorn, with a slightly smaller heart than I set out to purchase, but my new car was too good to resist! It is a 2007 2.5Si Sport, Unicorn low miles!

Looking for lots of advice and have received some good advice already from the likes of Zebedee - Ben, Mr Tidy, Eddie whom I've all met in person, two at Zedfest 2022!

Now I'd like to know how I can change my name on here to something more appropriate and descriptive of my new Z4 owner status!! (Ed pls help!).

I am looking for a new roof motor btw, and possibly a new front bumper without the dent in the middle before someone says something!

There's everything working apart from just the roof motor which I knew about.

I do want to purchase a purpose designed half roof cover, a bottle jack, stands, a hydraulic jack, new M badges for the wheels, a new high level brake light possiblynine in white, the old one is cracked, and oh, the most important thing of the lot, a new drivers side (right) cup holder. I almost forgot, the radio is really indifferent and presumably the door cones are (dummies?!). So happy to receive thoughts and advice on this (amp in that slot behind the battery, new working speakers, not going mad, just want to be able to hear proper music and speech, my working car a Honda Jazz 2006 even has a far better sound system than this!

I also heard the well known reported whine and tramliming of the run-flats, so I am thinking of changing so (please don't swampy me too much) but I would appreciate the two or three most popular swap-outs for these, the rims are 18", and yes have kerb rash so will follow Ben's advice on getting these sorted in due course, along maybe with a (slightly) less mute back box, thanks already Mat for the vid on your offering, sounds really good, but not deleting, I really am a bit over all the bang-pops some peeps prefer (why?!!).

By the way I may get spellings wrong sometimes, and write too much, but that is who I am, (so get over it!).

Thanks to all, looking forward to this new Zee4 world of enjoyment and wind on thw head (not much hair!).

Lovely Zed Scott. 8) Only way I know of to change your user name is to open a new account. Perhaps the mods can help. Though at 22 posts in, a new account may me the simply way to do it. :)

Looks good.
Depending where you are located there are a few of us who can help with a roof motor.
For cupholders, I fitted these a long while back and they are indistinguishable from the originals.
Pretty sure you can find them singly too.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

I was just getting used to your name Scott!

Good to meet you at Zedfest, although it's a shame you hadn't collected your Z4 in time. Looks very smart though.

You might get some inspiration for alternative wheels on here:- viewtopic.php?t=107556

As I think you are London based the nearest roof motor specialist to you will be Ross at RBM:- viewtopic.php?t=119837

A bit of a trek but he does have a couple of loan cars. And sometimes dead roof motors can be revived.
Coupes because stunning!

Got excited when I saw the title. I thought a Unicorn was a British company start up that was now worth a £Billion.

Nice shiny car though

Thank you, I have a right cup holder awaiting my pickup on return from my lovely drive to Wiston Estate for a retreat with a friend right near Shoreham. What a beautiful morning to drive down via Esher, Cobham and out down the A24 via Dorking and onwards, top down, wind in the ? hair?! Having a chatty passenver kept me very respectful for my first proper high speed (ish) run, having topped up oil, antifreeze a dn checked all discs, brake fluid, tyres etc. The exhaust note was quite enough with the top down, simple to disengage the hydraulics to get roof down with the known hydraulics motor issue, electronic catch working fine! Lovely engine note at slightly higher revs and six speeds very nice to have, feels slightly lower geared with revs at 70mph, won't be trying for the 149 - 150mph or thereabouts any time soon though, and not on these run-flat Bridgestone Pirenza tyres for sure! Thanks for info on roof repair, will. Look you guys out when ready! Needing to find a half cover, seen a quote nice black one with magnets and trapping the cover (somehow) although seems quite expensive at near £100?

Yes would have been a nice idea, a stallion in white with a twisted horn on the bonnet, mind you 'elf' n safety would have had a field day! So what would the fantasy.Unicorn vehicle.charscteristics be, what ideal engine, gearbox, position, layout, number of seats, engine, style, inspiration? Followed a canary yellow Lotus Elan this morning with a racing number on it, is this or a Lotuse Esprit be an inspiration without the gearbox issues?

Thank you. I think there is a way. Thanks for welcome, I know I may be asking a lot of questions and thanks in advance to you and all! The rh cup holder I fitted just before my first road trip on Saturday with a friend and it failed at the first hurdle, it wouldn't stay shut, a fine adjustment needed for their moulds I fear, it would close without the front plate and considered nastardising the old to merge with the 'faulty' one (I dismantled and tried to glue the broken arm but the ratchet wouldn't hold either, probably why it is broken!). So I've just received a full refund, no request to return it, refund in pocket through PayPal so if anyone's got a spare rh one going I'd be happy to buy so long as it closes with the front plate in place! Ideally a BMW original would be good! Zebedee offered me a pair but I think he'll need it for his next project, I am sure there was someone else but my brain isn't going that fast!

Thank you for the welcome. Now had three pillion, all loving it! Eldest a dear petrol head friend 87 year old, and he zipped in without a murmur (and out again!), his first trip ever in a rag-top, he had his baseball cap on to match mine!!
