Paddles and Cruise Retrofit

Post by Maria1 » Mon Jun 06, 2022 5:26 pm

I know this has been covered before but probably not together and because I am technically hopeless, I need it all again in simple language. I hope you will bear with me. Simply, my 2011 3.0 old style flappy paddles don't always work (R/H side up changes) so I suspect a loose connection. Given that I also have another BMW with the newer style (+/-) paddles I would like to replace the old with the new set up. Also, I would rather like to fit cruise control. All could be done at the same time by someone competent enough. The questions are then: a) will any 3/5-series etc three stick (wipers/indicator/cruise) column arrangement work if bought s/h off Ebay? Anything I need to look out for other than condition? b) is it possible to retrofit later flappy paddles? c) Again can these be bought s/h and, if so, which cars do I need to select from? and d) is there anyone in the Bristol/Glos area that could install the stuff and re-programme it all accordingly? What sort of price am I looking at here? Is it about £300 all in? TYVM!

Flappy paddles, there is a lot of info on the net regarding this and there are some specific kits available, alas I know nothing about them.
Cruise control, check my signature below.
Part numbers for the stalk sets I use are...
6989580
9110887
9121901
9123049
9123060
9169072

All of which work perfectly in the E89

You can easily swap the paddles over from one E89 version to another E89…

You would need to check the part numbers on a non E89 steering wheel / paddles to see compatibly..

I found the hard way you can’t use a manual steering wheel in lieu of an auto wheel

I would assume that if the person could do a cruise control upgrade the rest would be a walk in the park..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…
A very modified Atacama Yellow 35is

This video shows the paddle change, it’s fairly straight forward and appears not to require any coding, just the paddles and a few tools - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgnPs4RMUJk

I followed AnubisZed video and thread on cruise control fit, it’s definitely doable!

There's a detailed description in a pdf that's available here... mere minutes to swap them over (after waiting for the airbag to be safe once the battery is disconnected), no coding is needed.

I got a very tidy set of new style paddles from an ebay seller for £50 - last time I looked they were near £400 new :o

Perhaps before making the change you should check if the fault you have with the current paddles is the paddle switch and not something else, otherwise you may not solve your existing problem.

Cheers!
Andy

Thanks ACM. I am pretty sure it's a faulty connection in the switch as it only happens one way on one switch.

I've changed mine to the newer style of paddles, bought a complete steering wheel from a breakers and sent it to royals for a refresh. Took about 10 minutes to swap from the existing one, no coding needed. I watched this video as a guide https://youtu.be/jgnPs4RMUJk

Thanks all for the advice. Seems relatively straightforward. Seems though Indeed to wait for the parts to pop up on Ebay. Nothing at the moment on either the stalks or the paddles and I am certainly not going to pay £400 for a pair of switches!

:? Huh? Really? I've got loads in my watch list and on my saved searches lists, there is an abundance of stalk sets out there at the moment

Thanks all for advice on here. I have finally got around to buying a s/h set of stalks using the OEM reference numbers as a guide. There are a few out there at the moment! However, I can't seem to find any paddles. Any advice or pointing from anyone, particularly Dave AnubisZed please?!

No response :( Must be holidays! I am at a loss. I don't seem to be able to find any flappy paddles with the 32306799619 part number except for new at circa £400. It looks as though I could buy a complete steering wheel for less than that but I have no idea about compatibility. can anyone please tell me which other cars from the BMW range uses the same paddles as the E89 LCI? Is it anything that was concurrent (2013-2016)? Or better still point me in the direction of a good secondhand set so that the car can be prepped before it heads off for its late summer holiday. Many thanks.

Regarding the paddle shifters, you will probably be better off looking for a replacement steering wheel. Keep an eye out on Ebay (look for breakers or damaged cars instead of steering wheels) or the big breakers (Silverlake etc), I managed to pick up an Msport one (with the newer paddles) for £100 (prepare to haggle), sold my old steering wheel on Ebay for £120, I then sent it to Royals for a refurb and it looks/feels like new. So long as your car is an automatic there will be no problem updating to the newer paddles, once you disconnect the battery for 30 minutes (don't want the airbag going off) it takes about 10 minutes to swap over the steering wheel, no programming/coding needed. Steering wheel on Ebay now for £375, open to offers

One thing though. Do I have to look for e89 LCI breaking or do other BMWs of the same vintage use the same steering wheels please?
