do the rear sensors on 04 zs only beep once when reversing or should they beep when you get near a object as mine only beep the once when you put it in to reverse ?

That is a bit of a silly question, if you think about it. What good are they if they only beep once when you put it in gear? Of course they are supposed to beep when you get near an object; the closer you get the quicker the beeps until at approx 12" you get a continuous noise.

Do you definitely have rear parking sensors? It sounds as if you are getting a warning beep when selecting reverse, rather than being warned as you approach an obstacle.

So, have you physically checked you have rear parking sensors?

spammy, I have this problem too. From reading on the forum, the loud long single beep is a warning that your parking sensors are malfunctioning. Sometimes mine work (and don't have the loud long single beep), othertimes I hear the loud long single beep they do not work. This happens when I select reverse and the parking sensors are there embedded in the rear bumper.

spammy, that's exactly how mine look. I think that mine may be a loose wire as the previous owner told me that he'd taken the rear bumper off to paint a part of the bodywork that can rust under there, but I haven't had time to investigate it yet.

Read the PDC codes and then use contact cleaner in the connectors of the sensors with errors logged. If that doesn't work then replace the affected sensors entirely.

I had read that if all they do is beep when you select reverse that means they aren't working, which may be the issue you have.

So when I bought my 2nd Z4 and that happened I used it as a negotiating factor only to discover after I bought it that they worked fine when I got near to something, but could be coded to do that single beep as well! Soon got that coded out.

Good luck getting them sorted anyway.

O/T I know but a work colleague back in 2014 bought a used E92 3 Series Coupe with the sensors in the rear bumper but claimed they never worked. Eventually he found out it had been rear-ended and fixed with a used bumper from a car that had censors, but his car didn't have them!
