M Sport Steering Wheel

Post by Z4JB » Sun Jul 31, 2022 11:39 am

Hi all,

I’ve attached the below picture of my steering wheel on my 2004 E85 3.0i. I’m fairly sure the car never came with an M Sport Wheel? Can anyone point me in the direction of what steering wheel it will have come from factory with? It will be up for sale at some point.

Thank you!

You'd need a VIN decoder to be 100%, but I didn't think the M-Sport stuff came in until the facelift.

Cars manufactured before September 2003 never had the wiring loom to make it work. After that a simple plug and play.
Cars before September 2003 need a 2 wire modification from the stalk plug to the LCI ..a fairly straight forward job.

So if I wanted to add this wheel to my 2003 with DSP then it's can easy mod? Would be nice to have SW functionality.

I you remove the green plug at the bottom of the Steering squib and see if there are wires in position 9/10 ..if the there a straight swop of wheels. If not look on the web for a loom ..it’s 2 wires with the plug pins already on and scotch locks for the LCI end .

Lots of the net about this modification

Got to ask, O.P., why swap the wheel out?

Leather looks good from the photo’s, easy to clean up & dull/remove the shine. Also, not that hard to refurbish the trim?

How about a straight swap for my 2003 wheel with no buttons?

I wasn’t the biggest fan of the black trim! I might end up keeping it though, it’s good to know that it’s not original though so thanks for that help all! If I do come to change it out I’ll let people know but definitely looking to keep the multifunction options

I prefer the M steering wheel and it's a lot more desirable than the standard silver trim. I thought all M steering wheels came with the tri-color stitch no? OP's stitching looks all black.

Only the Z4M cars have the Tri colour stitching.
