Chickendippers wrote: Mon Nov 23, 2020 1:52 pm Around 120k and cost £1000 to fit at the dealer. Managed to limp it to the dealer which was only 5 miles away thankfully. it was on my list of things to do with my indy but was waiting for a cheaper insp1 to do at the same time. In the end i did an Insp2 followed 2x weeks later by the water pump. Lean times.
You paid a grand to get the water pump fitted? Please tell me that’s a mistake.
Rob
Probably not. I did get Sopers Lincoln to quote and prices below are RRP for OEM parts (with Soper's forum discount in brackets):

Water Pump £508.34 + vat (£549.01 incl VAT)
Screws £5.86 + vat (£6.34 incl VAT) [these come included with the Pierburg pattern part]
Thermostat £92.24 + vat (£99.22 incl VAT)

So just in parts alone, if you replace pump and thermostat at a non-forum friendly dealer it is £725.

Just don't buy from BMW!

When mine died in 2015 my Indy paid over £500 for a pump from BMW. :o When the pump died on my 325i in 2018 he bought an OE Pierburg one elsewhere and charged me around £300 for the same part. :D
Coupes because stunning!
Current - Silver Grey MC, Imola Red heated Nappa & carbon trim. Aeros, H & R Coil-overs, 224s, OE Strut brace, Nav, cup-holders, DSP Hi-Fi, pdc, cruise, MFSW, no CDV! E90 330i daily
Gone - Montego Blue
Gone - Ruby Black

Indeed. Bought the Pierburg pump (11517586925, £249.59, comes with the one time use only bolts with it) and Mahle Behr TM1497 thermostat (£58.99, plastic unlike the original metal one) from bmwmotormec on ebay. £308.58 vs £725 is a lot better and I can see plenty on here have got better prices than that too.

No mistake. It wouldn't have been much cheaper at the Indy I use either. Sure the pump is a couple of hundred quid but it is quite awkward to get to - hence the labour. I was expecting it to cost that much so it wasn't too much of a shock (only to the wallet).

It's very easy to get to on the Z - nothing much needs removing at all for access apart from the undertray. Much easier than it is on the 3 series. Even the 15 min bleed afterwards is fully automatic while the mechanic goes off and has a cup of tea.

I think me & my nephew changed the pump on my 3.0si in under an hour, it’s a quick & easy job :?

Well at least, now you've joined the forum, you can ask about these jobs first and go to the garage armed with the info. May save you a few quid later on. Or, depending on your confidence with spanners, read up and do the work yourself.
That's the beauty of a forum really; always someone who's done it before and can guide you.

Always happy to help if I can.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Mine finally failed. 150k miles and god knows how many track days now. Well impressed, swapped pump and thermostat for OE parts this morning.

Electric Water Pump Failure - Poll

Post by chalcid » Tue Jul 26, 2022 1:40 pm

Just to add to this - my water pump has just started to go on my 2008 2.5i sport c at 77k. Thanks to previous reading on the forum it was quickly identifiable before any overheating was experienced! Symptom was a quick spike in temp followed by a sharp drop back down to normal as the pump was working on/off. The pump did appear to be working when I ran the bleed procedure with the expansion cap off to have a look. Handily, I was just down the road from my local garage so just slowly rolled it over to get it checked and there were a few codes from the pump so it's in for a replacement. Cheers!
