M40i brakes - design flaw uncovered

Post by PhilA52 » Tue Mar 08, 2022 11:41 pm

Hi
My daily drive is a m2 Competition with the big brake upgrade my problem is that there is hardly any room between the brake calliper and the inside rim of the wheel and stones get wedged between the calliper and the wheel it’s happened twice only to the back wheels
They are to deep to get machined out and all you can do is get the edges of the groves polished out and re sprayed I believe they had the same problem with the old m4

By the way, if you have an iPhone just hold your finger on the photo and select the option to save the photo to your photo library.
Am an Android guy Jim, but cheers. I've sent away an email detailing what has happened so far to the dealership where I purchased the car. I've asked them to pass it onto the relevant person who deals with complaints and asked that this is recorded formally. I'll then follow that up by sending a copy to BMW (UK) Customer Complaints. Will keep you posted.

Best of luck. I have tried my best but it will take a number of owners to complain strongly before there is any chance of BMW coming up with a solution to this problem. :driving:

Yip. It would cost them a fortune to rectify it, so no wonder they are dragging there heels. It's all we can do, just keep at them.

Go down to Prestwick quite often for a walk along the beach front. Park next to the kids soft play building.
Did you buy your car from Harry Fairbairn, Irvine? That’s where I got mine and Paul MacDonald, Service Manager, is well aware of the MSport brakes problem. :driving:

I have been a customer of Harry Fairbairn, Irvine since 1983 but over the past 4 or 5 years they have changed a lot - for the worse. The personal service that I used to get has gone and you are just a number now.

They had two 30i's for sale, both looked immaculate in the pics. and videos, went to look at the blue and it was sitting outside and roof looked off, didn't even get off the bike. Week later took fiancée down in car to test drive the red one, arrived to find it was being used by the salesperson as a company car, filthy on outside and full of her clutter inside. Test drove anyway as hadn't driven one at that point. Out of courtesy had a chat, girl seemed amazed I wasn't interested in the deal offered.
Test drive worthwhile as I knew I could happily live with a 20i.

So I bought a 30i. :D

They caslled me a week or so after for some feedback........

Aye, same here now and again. No, Parks Hamilton, just did a wee search one night because I was looking for alternatives to the F-Type and an ex demo with 2000 miles on the clock popped up, the colour and spec I wanted, couldn't believe it and was offered ridiculous money for the Jag, too good to not go for it. Also, the waiting time for a new Zed was about 6 months. Got my second Honda S2000 from there and It was at the time, the best dealership I had dealt with, sadly they stopped making the S2000, so moved on. I went to Harry Fairbairn when the stone got stuck and I had a positive experience, maybe because it was an easy fix and a quick ton in their pocket, but the staff were really nice.

I have found the Service Dept staff at HF to be very good. It is the Sales Dept that has lost its way as far as I am concerned.

Why does this happen so often? On two occasions I've been offered test drives in cars that reeked of smoke and looked like they'd been used by the family from hell. I declined both offers and told the salesman why. One of them wasn't overly happy and saw my rejection as an attack on his cleanliness

They just don't get it.

Just had a weekend away in deepest wales, and lo and behold, i got a stone in the front brakes..

Flippin heck it was a hell of a screech.

Good job these forums exist otherwise i wouldnt know what it was...

Luckily a few applications of the brake at the same time as turning left and right freed it..

But the noise......  :o

Has anybody manged to find a fix for this yet...

Anybody tried the Supra versions yet.?? If they are different..
