Oil check

Post by IZB » Thu May 05, 2022 9:22 pm

So I know that you can check the oil level via the iDrive display, but I thought I’d use the traditional method and check using the dipstick, but I can’t find it on my m30i. I’ve had a good look to find it but with no luck, am I missing something?

Yes, a dipstick!

I'd be amazed if your car had one as my 2006 E86 didn't, you could only check the level via the OBC.

Sit in the car and grasp the steering wheel in both hands.
Focus firmly on both hands, then let your eyes flow up your arms, back to your body.
In a lot of cases this is where you'll locate the dipstick. :D

NB. Please take this in the light-hearted manner in which it was typed. No offence intended.

Oil check

Hi snuff, point well made - I’ve never had a car without a dip stick. I was wondering about how people top up their oil between services if they can’t gauge it without starting the card and reading it from the iDrive display.

I'm not sure about the G29 (too new for me) but on my E86s and E90 the reading has 4 graduations that represent 250ml each, so from top to bottom is a litre.

On those cars I believe if it got to the bottom mark it would flash up a warning to add 1.0 litre, but I never let them get that low as I made a point of checking the level regularly just to be sure the sensor was working!

But given how new G29s are they won't need top ups between services. Might the handbook offer some clues?

My E89s definitely didn’t have a dipstick so I assume that my G29 doesn’t have one either. I never looked TBH :)

No dipstick!

Don’t miss it either. When at min level I think it’s 1 litre top up required. Car will tell you how much to top up!

When I bought my first e89 I was given a piece of advice which I have stuck to ever since, unless the car tells you there is an issue, there is no need to open the bonnet.

I've had mine exactly a year now and I don't even know where the bonnet release is let alone opened it up for a peep :D

You've never had to add screenwash in a year? :o

No but there can't be much left in the washer bottle so perhaps I'll have a peep now :D
