Hi ZedHeads,
I'm looking for a steer for getting my bumper re-sprayed.
It's not for the Zed, but the daily. Someone scraped the corner of the bumper. The colour is a Mineral White with a pearlescent finish, which I think is where the issue may lie. BMW wouldn't do half the bumper and blend it in as they said it's too difficult given the finish. I won't even say what they quoted, but I nearly fell off my chair!
Any recommendations here?
One question - should I insist on 'BMW paint', which I know they don't make but I understood it's a harder finish. A local bodyshop said this isn't true but keen to hear what u guys know!

My son had his 140 bumper resprayed for stone chips, was £300. Right next to Vines Redhill but probably too far for you?

BMW are not correct in what they say. Mineral white can be smart repaired. There is a smart repairer based in London that I follow occasionally on Youtube called King Vehicle, he has done a video of a smart repair on a pearl white car and his workmanship appears to be spot on. Could be worth a try. Here's a link to his channel:

No such thing as BMW paint.
Factory BMW paint is supplied by Glasurit (BASF).
In regards to your hardness comment - paint from factory is harder than paint from a bodyshop because of the baking process rather than the actual paint itself. Factory paint is baked at 200+ degrees celsius. Bodyshops cannot replicate this (they bake cars at around half the temperature) and so their paint is often softer than factory paint - hence why it is less durable, more prone to stone chips and lacquer peel than factory paint.
Anyways I digress, different bodyshops use different systems, if a bodyshop uses a Sikkens or a PPG system but you ask for Glasurit they will probably turn around and laugh.
It’s hard to advise without seeing the damage however this is my tuppence worth:
If you’re not too fussed just get a smart repair. I have never used, but heard good things about KDM Smart Repairs - https://instagram.com/kdmsmartrepairs
However if you want it mint you are probs better off painting the entire bumper. Paint which has been blended can always be seen, whereas it is much harder to tell with a panel which has been repainted properly.
Can recommend Gary @ Ital Coachworks http://www.ital-coachworks.co.uk/ - who do the accident repair work for BMW Park Lane. He will also give you good advice rather than try to get as much ££ out of you. Make sure wherever you go, that you get a warranty on the job too. Last thing you want is to find paint defects a year or so down the line with no come back.

Was he happy with it? Have you seen it and what did you think? If they did a good job can I please have the garage name as this is fairly local to me and I've been considering getting my front bumper resprayed for a while? Thanks.

Thanks for all the detailed replies. Yes, I am aware BMW actually don't make the paint.
Here's a pic. Drivers side corner plus further down. No idea who did it; just found it like that!

That should be easily repairable with a smart repair without the need to paint the entire bumper. A smart repair done right will be as good as painting the entire panel. Years ago when I was trading cars I bought Lexus in white pearl which need couple of areas of the bumper and lower panels doing, as the car was worth only 2k I decided to give it a go myself to keep costs low and I was actually surprised how well the job turned out, of course in my case you could see the difference if you looked hard but had the job been done by a competent smart repairer it would have been perfect.
