Thinking of coming back for all the wrong reasons....?

Post by T1berious » Mon Nov 08, 2021 3:04 pm

Hey PVR,

Tried the 718 and 718S when we were thinking of replacing the Z4MR, was left underwhelmed. However all the reviews of the GTS 4.0 were so epic, it seemed like a no brainer. The PDK is on the strength of the reviews of the manual having crazy long ratios (80 in 2nd!), not that I'm a driving god but I did like the DCT in the M2C... (hides head in shame).

As the PDK is the standard by which all are judged it kind of makes sense (plus it has closer ratios).

Plus 60 in 4.0 is plenty quick enough for me.

As long as you like it

I drove my M with DCT in the Swiss mountains, and it was good fun. The next time I took the Porsche (Manual), and it was for me a factor 10 times more fun in getting the gears right, not being faster of course.

I do like the DCT in my M when I am travelling in the UK though as it is easier and more relaxed.

A time and a place and so.

Op , you had a very much modded z4m with some extremely high end parts on it if I remember correctly .....

Would love some feedback on how the newer stuff youve owned compared ... Ownership experience, power , handling etc.

Hey Beedub, nope, mines was completely stock

The only changes I made were the obligatory stubby, some geo work, moving the roof motor to the boot and switching over to MPSS.

The fact that MPSS were standard fit on the M2C tells a story :)

So compared to the Z4MR the M2C didn't feel as much of an "event", just sitting down and peering over that long bonnet made you feel like a hero before you even started the engine. The M2C was hilariously, stupendously fast and had epic handling (better than a stock Z4M). The seating position in the M2C was way too high but banging through the gears on a decent road soon turned that into a bit of a hangover after a mental night out. You hate the aftermath but at time things couldn't get any better.

The ownership experience on my Zed was a bit of a heart breaker, I loved it but after 1000's spent it was time she went. The M2C in contrast was a piece of cake in comparison, yes there are horror stories of the S55 Crank hub issues but these tend to only affect tuned cars but out side of regular servicing (even snuck in a DIY oil and filter change) it was hassle free.

Best thing I did was change over to MP4S's, in the wet it could bite on the MPSS's, totally changed with geo and MP4S's became fun and manageable in the damp conditions we see in the UK 70% of the time.

One comment, the PDK ratios, though a bit shorter, are still pretty long, not sure I would trade a manual for a PDK just based on ratios, it is like 3% difference.

Have a watch of this on the 4.0GTS

https://youtu.be/kehPrGdmyxU

Polarising.

Problem is all these newer cars are trying to be like old cars to keep the purists happy but then charge silly money.

The thing that I keep coming back to is anything I lust after is 60-80K+ and even more so at the moment. These cars aren't 5x the car the Z4M is and there is no way im going to get a 1-4 UK car on any of the options.

Hey Tomscott,

Interesting, I guess it all boils down to your individual use case. So I kinda get where that vid was going but the flip side is you'll have someone like Harry Metcalfe waxing lyrical about it being the first time he'd prefer a Cayman to a 911.

If I was going to go 911 I'd go C4S and that starts at 103k before hitting the options.

I think Joe Achilles did a recent GTS vs M2C vid, his thoughts rather than a side by side comparison and for him the M2C makes sense but it was pretty clear he loved every second of driving the GTS.

I guess the stars have aligned and with the craziness in the market resulting in me losing next to nowt on the M2C for 2 years, plus having the extra handy for a Cayman GTS (being careful on the options) it seems to just work for me.

And if it doesn't, my gut feel is I could keep it for 6 months and still lose very little :)

Or when bought wisely, gain. My 911 investment is up by 75% over my purchase price.

Jaym on cars, oh man I honestly just in general can't agree with this guy less.... He actually rather irritates me πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ.

You know, as I watched it I did cringe a fair bit, pause and just knock it along to the conclusion.

I guess as a "content creator" going with the accepted view doesn't get you many views? No idea but he's definitely in the minority (of YouTubers) that hold the view that a base spec 992 is better than a 718 GTS 4.0.

My fave is this one...

Gosh! It's been a while!

Where were we? I have an update. We've got a build slot for this September for a Cayman GTS 4.0!

Spoke to the dealer Monday and will be going in this weekend to double check the build options.

In other news, we got a Kia EV6. Really happy with it and for 99% of our journeys it's flawless. It's huge though!

More updates incoming!

Cheers,
